View Full Version : Has anyone Line-X'd or speedliner'd their defender interior?

Hi Gents,

I had a look at a well priced early puma yesterday with a fair few Km's on the clock (221,000) but had a new engine with only about 100,000. Mechanically I'm not really worried about the car as everything had receipts for work done etc and I know that with some looking after I can easily get another 200,000 out of the old girl.

My main issues are with the interior, which is really showing its age and high Km's, all the front lining is absolutely cooked and needs replacing. After doing a search on landy bits, a new liner appears to be around $400 which is for the front only, not including under the seats, which is up there..

Anyway, In my current Ute I have a spray in liner which I'm pretty happy with, SO I was thinking of potentially stripping the entire interior and getting the whole floor of the defender sprayed in speedliner or Line-X.

On a google search I've found this has been done a few times overseas but haven't found anything from in Australia so I'd be really keen to hear from someone local who may have done it.

Cheers,

All I did to ours (2010 and 175K) was line the rear wheel arches with carpet and the noise level is fine. Even those sharp cracks as stones flip up while travelling are muted.
I wouldn't expect to ever getting it "quiet' as in Disco or RR terms, but it's been good enough for us.
I can even hear the navigator telling me what to do....... [bigsmile1]

I would advise against it as a replacement for rubber mats etc. Why you might ask?

I tublined the interior of my 130 when I lost my mats and I'll say did virtually nothing for noise or heat AND most importantly, the dust and dirt gets stuck in the grippy textured surface and looks really second rate.

Better off getting proper mats, especially in a puma.

Furthermore, when it comes to dynamat, as much as you can, use it on the "hot side" of a panel like the footwells.

Why? If you use dynamat on the interior, like I did and like it shows on the box; the metal panels still get hot underneath and therefore still radiate heat into the cab.

The foil coating of the dynamat is designed to REFLECT heat, and the sticky stuff absorbs vibration (noise).

So yeah, learn from my mistake.

I did it to a friends TDI defender and there was a noticable sound reduction. Probably due to actually sealing up the gaps in the floor panels more than the liner itself. We used a smooth roller in the cab area and the texture in the cargo area, it looks right in the TDI but, as above, would look pretty average in a Puma.

Dynamat, or the local car builders liners work great.

Maybe look around for a wreck for some stock mats?

Highly recomend you wrap the exhaust while you are at it. From the Cat to the flange near the transfer case keeps a lot of heat out of the cab and the transfer case runs a lot cooler too.

I second that about wrapping the exhaust and did mine on the Puma long ago. Certainly keeps heat out of the footwell and probably cuts down a bit of noise as well.
We really don't find the vehicle that noisy at all especially when off road. What I think increases noise is the huge rubber some vehicles are shod with especially the "tough as, unbreakables" you can hear before they come into sight......
