Ring Tail Possum

[The ho har's]

We have possums here all the time, rural living is what you expect. Heard a different noise tonight and I have found a ring tail possum clinging to our screen door. Chased him away hopefully to far away. How exciting are we we have them here.

Ring tails love to live in roof cavities. Many sleepless nights can result from this particular cohabitation.

Fortunately we have no scrub turkeys. we do have enough possums though, they keep eating my Violas on the back verandah :(

How many do you want?.We have heaps of them here,ring and brush tails.

There were 5 living in our garage,and 8 living under the house when we moved in,17yrs ago.

I had to possum proof the garage and under the house,and they haven't been back in either area.They can squeeze through any hole that their head can fit through.

Mating season is the worse time,they are very active,and jump from the trees and crash onto our tin roof during the night.

There is also a continual battle between breeding kookaburras and possums for a hole in a large ant nest on the side of an ironbark tree in our front yard.

So far this year the Kookaburras are winning,there are eggs there at the moment.The kookaburras will actually fly and hit the possums,and nearly knock them out of the tree.

As for brush turkeys,the Springer Spaniel sorts them out,although the young ones are extremely fast.

The noisey miners will alarm call when there is a brush turkey around,and the Springer knows the alarm call,so as soon as she hears it,she is off looking.

Ringy's are cute, and are usually not a problem. They are not really a pest. Brush tails often follow them though, and they most definitely ARE a pest. We have both, way south of you. Best thing to do is possum proof the actual house and enjoy their company. This, admittedly, can be hard in the wee hours. Ignore what someone else said though: ringtails are almost silent in what they do; it's the brushtails that sound like a football team on your roof. Of course, up your way they might also be bandicoots. A whole other source of laughs in the night.

Used to have a little pet opossum, came from his mothers pouch when I was trapping them...lived in my top pocket of bush shirt.

And that's why cats get short shrift around our place. Trap them then shoot them then dump them ....... the cats that is [bigsmile1] Can't abide the native animal killing buggers.
