G'day guys,

So the wifes LR2 TD4 has developed a quite concerning belt noise when cold with the A/C on. It sound like the auxiliary belt is trying to jump off the side of one of the pulleys and then jump back with a clunk. Turn the A/C off or drive 3km and it goes away. Everything looks fine and I drove it to Townsville and back on the weekend and it was fine.

So I've ordered a replacement auxiliary belt and while I'm at it I'll change the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and pulleys while I'm there cause she has just turned 10 years old.

I'll let you know what I find.

Check the clutch in the alternator pulley. When these fail they do weird things with the belt

Yes Woko it was the alternator pulley clutch. It actually felt ok after I pulled it off, but the noise has now stopped with the new one fitted.

I'd never come across or heard of an alternator pulley clutch before so good learning experience.
