While i was crawling in traffic on the western ring rd due to a semi trying to jump the concrete barrier into the other direction of traffic, i saw bike with a rider in hi-vis green approaching.
Didnt look right as bike was quite narrow but sort of looked like a a bike cop from afar, as he got closer i could he was riding a super motard of some kind.
A few more rode past a few seconds later.

WTF is a '"super motard" ? , not some sort of limp wristed psuedo scooter as Vlad suggests but some sort of dirt off road bike ??

Essentially a dirt bike with a small front wheel and road tyres, very nimble for negotiating traffic which is why i think they are using them.

They need about 500 of them on the ground,,, might stop a few people from using phones whilst driving. They'd soon recoup the money spent on labour/machines and training.

Would be a good choice, our coppers have some off road bikes for getting along tracks next to railways etc, those would be a good all rounder.

‘‘Twas a day of semis doing dumb **** all over Melbourne today. Not only the one on the ring road, but the entry ramp Fromm Dynon road to the freeway was closed and a Toll truck being righted by a big arse crane, then driving down little boundary road this arvo at the rounderbout to boundary road, a container was lying on its side in the middle of the road - no truck that I could see, I think it just fell off a truck that managed to stay upright. 2 Police there looking a bit perplexed about what to do - think it had only just happened.

Victoria Police start motorcycle lane filtering - Motorbike Writer (https://motorbikewriter.com/victoria-police-lane-filtering/)

OK, thanks all for the 'heads up'. I've learnt a new term here "lane filtering". I take it this refers to motor bikes weaving through slow moving/peak hour traffic. Are there any rules or guide lines for this ? I was of the opinion that I 'owned' the lane that I was in, no problem with slow moving bikes weaving through but when slow moving bikes become fast moving bikes and they clean up mirrors or the side or rear of your vehicle who's at fault/liability ?? Do I need to indicate if I'm moving within my own lane ??

Yes it's legal at low speed in this state (SA). As a rider I would say, just hold your line, don't make any unexpected movements and I won't hit your mirror! I only do it in pretty much stationary traffic at traffic lights etc, so I don't have to worry about any idiot who decides he is going to try and squeeze me.

As a Rider i am not comfortable with lane splitting [bighmmm]
Yes i have done it and mainly for safety at Traffic lights but then again i avoid traffic as i ride for enjoyment not because i have to[wink11].
Majority of my rides involve nice hilly country roads on a fine day [bigwhistle]
Yes i ride to work occasionally and it is done so with respect to my safety and the surroundings [thumbsupbig]

as long as we all ride to our comfort and ability levels, all is good. Individual choice. BTW lane splitting is the name for high speed manoeuvres and is illegal. Splitting hairs I know! I ride to work a lot, and use the technique to get pole position at the lights, for my safety, I can't be rear ended whilst sitting there, and I get clear road when I get away from the cars behind me. Less chance of being hit!

I think its times like that that the news guys should be making sure they get number plates as well as pictures of the phone users, and they should all be charged at full pelt.

I watched a guy in a Bentley the other day,, all over the road, couldn't hold speed. I get up beside him, and his on his phone FFS. What, no bluetooth in a $200K car??? Absolute ****ing ****** of the highest order.

A bit off topic, but there are quite a few paramedics on bikes here apparently it is a sort of trial..
It is the quickest way to get around by a country mile, due to the wonderfull traffic congestion we have.

They all carry defibs and other basic gear.

I got a better one, noticed some lady in the left lane on the M1,going about 70 to 80k's, with a book on the steering wheel, seemed to be reading it.....

FFS,she needs to lose her license for ever.

Our vans are up high, the things we see are unbelievable.

I have seen a commuter eating a bowl of cereal on her lap in peak hour traffic. Another time spotted a truckie on the New England with a newspaper spread on the steering wheel. A copper told me he once pulled over a late night motorist who was as drunk as three shearers, blew 0.28, and was smoking a cigarette and drinking a stubbie whilst driving. When asked to get out of the car he said "You will have to help me. I am too ****ed."

Yeah, but unfortunately won’t be introduced any time soon by the sound of it.

It would be easier to just walk along traffic with a hand held camera and snap an image of the driver and number plate.

I watched a lady reading while she ran into the back of my Kombi. My tow ball went right through her radiator and caused quite a bit of damage. Thankfully i had all but a scratch.
Also watched a young lady P later playing scrabble on her phone in traffic on the M5 in Sydney. I could see she was very slow to move and then braking way latter than she should so kept well clear.

NSW and Vic have had them for a few years now.
First responders to get to the patient ASAP and initiate treatment and attempt to stabilise them before a stretcher vehicle arrives.

Cheers, Mick.
