I bought a APT binnacle mount a few weeks ago and fitted it. Was a bit fiddly at first since I'd misplaced by stumpy phillips screwdriver and quarter inch rachet. Once I got them back again I was racing. In true landrover tradition I had to pull off more dash than I expected, to get to it, and then I had to file out a couple of the holes a little, just as the crappy original ones had been filed out. Not a big job though.
Then I fixed my broken binnacle tab with Q-bond but found a second crack somewhere else as soon as I refitted it. Not sure how long I can hold off buying a metal binnacle.
Cheers

I looked at the APT but went the fill raptor solution.
I see Rijidij is also developing a solution.

My metal dash and binnacle are in the prototype stage at the moment. I’m hoping to fit one to my County over Xmas.

That looks awesome Murray :)
I can't really see from the photos, but is there an opening between the top of the flat plate and the surround to let air from the vents through like the original plastic one?

This prototype one hasn’t got any air gap, but I can add slots or similar once I’m happy with the gauge layouts.
I also want to leave space for additional warning lights, such as front and rear diff locks etc

I bought the raptor binnacle and mount...expensive..but now i can get in there if needed without the plastic garbage cracking and breaking up. I'd recommend doing both binnacle and mount. Easy to fit as well.

That looks good Murray. I'll be watching this with interest as mine needs replacing too. I'll be going the Raptor route for the centre of the dash where the radio mounts.

I’ll be offering these as as package, inner and outer steel components. No point doing half the job, the plastic will always be a problem.

I should point out too, with the raised dash, the dash pad will need to be cut out to allow any more than 30mm depth for gauges in the top section, easy enough to replace a dash pad if need to in the future, but from my experience once you fit something like this it’s pretty rare that it will be removed.

I'll be very interested in it once you get it to 'export' stage!

Ditto. I'd like one, even as a 'beta user'.

How much was the raptor unit and did you source locally or sent from UK?

Any particular reason why did you opt for the raptor over the APT unit?

Resurrecting thread. Was there any progression with these? Our plastic dash is damaged so looking at options.

Are you doing the symmetrical layout with the 3 small gauges on either side of the speedo? I like that one better.

Thanks Murray,
My son has my Defender now and is looking at options as the binnacle is cracked, so will pass on the info. I now have a D4 so your rear wheel carrier is high on my list of priorities as well.
Cheers

I’ve done the symmetrical one in my County, and I did one for a customer who requested that layout.
The reason I don’t regularly stock that layout is, you can’t use it with the original cable driven speedo like in a County or earlier Defender. You need to fit an electronic speedo. Td5 is ok as they have an electronic speedo as standard.

What crazy person would use those horrible Lucas gauges with a nice binnacle like this? [biggrin]

[emoji16] A few of the gauges in that pic aren’t even hooked up, I just threw in what I had on hand for a photo. I do still have the original battery gauge, but I’ll be swapping that out for a VDO like the rest.

Hi Murray,
Just a quick question, the TD5 dash, the fan switch and hot cold fan switches can still mount to the side of the binnacle? Looks like Brock will be buying one if so.
Thanks Craig

Yes, all the original controls mount to the steel binnacle just like the original. The only thing you won’t have with the new Td5 dash is illumination for the heater controls.
