Overlanders say they bookmark this page.......buggered if I know why as when ya need fuel ya need fuel, the option to jump the border to fill up in another country wouldn’t prevent to often

Really doesn't tell much as many countries have a road user charge on diesel vehicles EG New Zealand.

Was parked up in an empty Italian supermarket car park with some friends a few years ago. We were discussing what we were going to do. All of us were in need of fuel to continue for the days journey but all local servos were closed cause it was a Sunday. As was the supermarket and we needed to restock supplies also.

A local guy wandered past, heard us talking English and asked where we were from - blah blah blah. After a bit of conversation we mentioned we needed fuel and didn't realise Sunday was such a problem for us. He said no problem why don't you just go to Slovenia to fuel up.

Thinking he was having joke one of asked how far that was. He pointed down the road saying about ~1.5km is the Slovenian border. Just across the border is a Slovenian service station. They trade on Sundays and not only that, the fuel is cheaper than in Italy.

I suppose it pays to know exactly where you are sometimes though in our defence, in that part of the world, you cross the border without realising it multiple times a day in the normal course of just driving around.

Forget global prices, it varies enough in the same city. Servo near my work is usually 1.36/ltr, a small detour on my way home and its 1.25/ltr.

Australia has a road user tax on diesel also, at the time it was aimed at trucks as well NSW has the old 3x3 (3 cents for 3 years)fuel excise, which is apparently 12c last I checked probably more now.

Once ANY form of Taxation is introduced the chances of it being removed is practically Zero even IF a sunset clause is attached to it :wallbash:
