Hi All,
Firstly I would like to wish everyone all the best for Christmas and the new year. May you have a sensational ending to 2017 and an even better 2018.
I recently bought a 2014 discovery 4 and have been setting it up for camping and 4wd'ing. One of the options I'm looking at is to remove spare wheel from underneath to the back but I cant seem to find a spare wheel carrier that doesn't need full bumper bar replacement although I've seen them on other cars. Can anybody advise where I can get them please.
I still haven't written off changing the entire back bumper. Apart from the TJM one are there other makes I should be looking at.
Thanks in advance for your input.

I've got a Kaymar rear Bar on mine..... as that is what the original Owner installed...... If I was doing again myself I'd me using the original bar and a Rijidij wheel carrier.

What ever you choose - keep in mind the additional weight you are adding to the vehicle. These vehicles look great fully kitted, but they get very heavy very fast - when fully loaded for a trip, I struggle to stay under GVM - without any passengers!

I'd go for the Rijidij RWC as it doesn't cover the right rear lights like the others do. But saying that the one I have is for a single wheel only. Good bit of equipment and well made.

Is not the downside to Riji design that it blocks more of the rear window view compared to the others? I guess it’s 6 of one, half dozen ....

Thanks again guys. I noticed the weight issue immediately after I had the ARB bull bar and winch installed so thanks for the heads up. I'm also looking at the LLAMS or IID tools to be able to adjust the suspension to compensate for the extra weight.

Go the LLAMS and Rijidij wheel carrier, I also have the Kaymar Bar with dual carriers, like Mark if I was to choose again I'd go the Rijidij carrier.
LLAMS are brilliant, so easy to use and easy to fit, the missus fitted ours[smilebigeye]

This reads like a misunderstanding of the aftermarket height control options (Llams and iiD). You don't need anything aftermarket to adjust suspension for weight or extra load. The stock suspension self-levels regardless of weight or load. It's really worth a read of the FAQs to gain a better understanding of how the vehicle's suspension works. [ The AULRO Discovery 3/4 & RRS FAQ (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/93220-aulro-discovery-3-4-rrs-faq.html) ] Some of it is a bit old now but there's still great information in there.

Hi Miffy
If I had my time again I would change the way my car is set up. I have an Outback Accessories RWC and it's a great bit of gear but it's (and all others are the same) a pain to have to open it when you need access to the rear. I take it off unless I'm heading bush and drive without a spare.
Ideally I would have put on a platform rack so the wheel (or wheels) would go up there leaving the back free. It all depends on what you want to do? Why are you removing it? Is it to put a long rang tank in, otherwise there is no reason to shift it?

Hi Miffy,
also if you don't mind, I'd like to ask (instead of starting another thread for a relevant topic);
Does anyone know where I can get the under guards for the D3/D4 rear bumper? The guars I am referring to are like aluminium winglets which guard the bumper and mufflers.
I've search Discovery 3/ Discovery 4/LR3
- under guard
- rear bumper guard
- spare wheel guard etc etc
Cheers in advance to my saviour

Ben from APT is considering a rear protection plate but that could be some time before anything gets to production. I have seen an Italian version that looks very heavy but sadly can't remember the company name. Kept a photo but nothing else.

Wow, when you’ve got money burning a hole in your pocket, spend a tonne of cash to protect mufflers?

From memory, this protection and a rijidij rear wheel carrier are far lighter than the Kaymar bar option.
Yes they are also significantly different.
I am looking for rear protection and this may be a substitute/competition for the Kaymar bar.

Very expensive from memory. Shipping large heavy stuff is a killer, plus exchange rate. Not worth it was my thinking.

Maybe Brown Davis or similar may make it for you? BD made bash plates for motor and transmission of my previous car and as it was the "1st" I got only charged for the materials. Enough interest happy to take further as I know people at BD well.

Feedback from Italy weight = 18kgs.
Therefore to compare.... Granny smith apples to pink lady apples....
Kaymar rear bar
98kg (unconfirmed)
over centre latch
can carry two wheels
all steel
can fit high lift/accessories
no under vehicle protection
Blocks rear lights
Agricultural for price (opinion – not fact)
TJM quote (date – 28Nov17) $3,880excl GST fitting $770
ARB quote (date – 28Nov17) $3,376excl GST fitting $468
Rijidij + (M.DI.4X4) under protection plate
28 + 18kg
SWMBO friendly latch on Rijidij
Only carry one spare
Under vehicle protection
Rijidij D4 MKII doesn’t block tail lights
Refined/sexy (opinion – not fact)
Rijidij $1490incl GST + freight (owner to fit)
Plates (about) $1000AUD delivered to Sunshine Coast (owner to fit)
Total (about) $2650 incl freight

Conclusion;
Rijidij + under protection plate (excl fitting, incl GST) is $1,600 cheaper, and 50kg lighter.

Thanks for clarifying a few things and the useful info. I'll certainly be taking your comments into consideration before setting up the back of the car and inside.

That makes the postage EU262!. That seems to be very expensive for an 18kg piece of kit. It also looks like it comes in 2 halves so not as big as I had originally thought. My 5 compomotive wheels weighed more than 18KG and cost less to ship from the UK. I wonder if the italians are doing a job on you? I would be interested but not when the postage is nearly as expensive as the item. If you can get the shipping down I would be interested.
