RRC INTERIOR TIMBER PANELS.

Hi again blokes,
Can anybody shed some light on what type of timber was used on the interior of the standard model 1986 RRC, this model was fitted with the cloth covered seats.

Like most timber used in British car interiors, I think you'll find they are walnut, or burr walnut, but I stand to be corrected.

In that case straight walnut probably. Our 1948 Daimler had straight grained walnut door cappings and a burr dash panel. Uncle's RR Silver Dawn had burr everywhere.

If you still have some in the car take it to a cabinet maker and he should not only be able to tell you what type of wood it is, He should also be able to cut and supply some new pieces for you as well [thumbsupbig]

I'm not so sure. I've had cars with walnut and the RRC wood was much lighter. I removed mine and refinished it so I know it was very light in colour.

My late 89 has burr American walnut and after 25 years the clearcoat was disintegrating. Tried to sand it off and also tried varnish remover but must be some kind of polyurethane coating which is ultra hard and ended up damaging the thin walnut veneer trying to get the clearcoat off. In the end carefully chipped off the veneer, sanded the underlying timber, stained it mahogany and sprayed with polyurethane and came up surprisingly well as had quite a nice grain it.
Unless you're into serious restoration professional renovation would be very expensive.
I've also seen laser cut sets of vinyl replica covering pieces on eBay, I think was about $500 or so for a complete set but probably looks like what it is - fake and plasticky.
