View Full Version : Hail - first world problem but ouch

My D3 looks a bit like a golf ball. Divots all over after a hail storm last night in Doncaster Vic. Seen lots of similar size in NSW and north of there but it was big to extremely big for Melb. Golf ball size hammering for over 5 minutes, Rough quote $17k. 2005 with 360,000 + km. Insured for market value.
No way I give up mine if the insurance says its a write off[biggrin]
I still want to crack 500,000km. The rough look of the dints in every panel might suite my rough bollard anyway. Sunk it, Snowed it, Mountains and mud, rock and sand. Insurance market value? My value might be a lot more.
Thousands of poor sods in the same problem with me I guess. Luckily I do not see it as a parting moment.

If your lucky they’ll write it off (repairable) pay you out minus the price to purchase it back. You should make a few dollars out of. That’s what I did to my hail damaged defender.

Sad to hear ND,, both our cars copped a bit, but nothing like that. Leeanne's having her Kuga checked out a bit later, and depending on that we'll make a decision as to what we do with the D4.

Yep, a mate did that with his Ute a couple of years back. Hail damage is a repairable write off, just need a VASS certificate here in Vic with a RWC to reregister it which is a bit of faffing about but not hard.

Sad to hear ND.
I had a lucky escape i think.... as i was pulling into the drive i heard a loud crack like a rock hitting the car....saw a few more hit the ground in the front yard. My car doesn't fit under my car port....so I pushed the nose under the veranda and my Rhino rack protected the rest....
Pity the same can't be said for the daughters Mazda 2..... by the time I grabbed a sleeping bag and tried to get it over her car out of the road.... I was just wet, bruised and wasting my time ....

They tried to write off my old D1 when we had they big hail storm many years ago, I asked them to repair it instead, dentaway I think did it, there where hundreds of dents but they managed to get them all out and she looked brand new again. If you buy and drive a hail damaged car then check with insurance companies as they may not cover you as the car has existing damage.

This. Because even if you have a crash they'll argue that they don't owe you the full cost of a panel because it was already damaged. O r even not cover you at all or ANY panel damage. So ye, CHECK and get it in writing.

I thought the 'scam' of writing vehicles off (from a roadworthy point of view) due to hail damage was done and dusted here in Vic and was now just a NSW 'anomaly'. No valid reason to pay out to be re certified as roadworthy after hail damage that I can see.

Quoted to fix with new roof and bonnet are just over 14k. QBE is electing to write it off[bigsad] Red book apparently has my D3 2005SE with only 370,000km at about 15k I know I cannot get one like mine for 15k[bigsad][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad]
That it has a Bull Bar, Mitch Hitch, Long Range tanks, Rock sliders, UHF, LAMS, Pioneer GPS/Sat Nav/Blue Tooth radio, roof racks, Light bar, 5 17inch MTs and 5 18inch ATs still needs negotiation[bigsad][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad]
The $20k or more of Insurance premiums I have paid over the last 10 years + makes me feel a little ripped of right now or it could just me being grumpy[bigwhistle]
Had planned to take it past the half million km before starting to consider a upgrade. Tough to think a little ice has put me in this spot after so many river crossings, Mud, Snow, dirt, rocks and mountains survived so well.

That doesn't surprise me. I heard similar stories a few years back. Check that it's not already on the WOVR and the registration cancelled.
Should you buy "the wreck" back, it will need a costly inspection to take it off the WOVR and a roadworthy to register it again.
If repairs are $14k and thy are going to write it off, I suspect they are going to pay you less than $14k.

I've heard they normally write cars off if the roof is damaged, as body panels can be replaced relatively easily, but the roof is a cut and weld job.

You could see what they've valued the salvage value of your car. You may then decide to buy it, and possibly get it repaired. You would of course need to find the "right man" to do the job.

Not yet on the WOVR. Offered 18k less excess and then if I wanted 7k to buy it back. I was assured I can have/get third party insurance and as it is not a Statutory Write off it would be possible to keep it registered. (road worthy inspection would be needed)
I got a puncture which is not repairable so the car will have no spare. Front control arms are in need of work now. Have to make up my mind in seven days. Several at auction already next week which I will look at before making a decision. Met a gent last week who picked up a very neat 2007 with a lot lower km than mine for $20k. If I let it go I am going to take Dual battery and controller, Second fuel tank, LAMs, Double din Sat Nav and UHF out and give it to them. Roof rack and Light bar were already off. Crook with myself about that as roof would have most likely been fine if it was on like it was for the last two years. It used about an extra 2 litres per 100km fuel with the roof rack on.

Agree and thank. I will see if I can do that to my or a new one depending on the auction results over the next week or two. With about 250+ cars a day from QBE assessment centre alone A few options should become available which might be better than buying mine for $7000.

Hail damage wouldn't make a vehicle unroadworthy would it, unless it smashed the windows?
Couldn't you just withdraw your insurance claim and continue to drive it with dents?
I once had hail damage on ourcD1 and didn't claim, just got it repaired privately for a modest cost.
I remember the repairer asked if it was an insurance claim and when I said 'No' the cost of the repair almost halved! Miraculous.

Surely one of those paint-less dent repairers can fix it ?

Here in Vic., if a vehicle is deemed uneconomical to repair, it is deemed either a "repairable write off" or a "statutory write off". It is then entered into the WOVR register. If a vehicle is entered into this register, it is considered unroadworthy and the registration cancelled. If it is a repairable write off, you can get it inspected and removed from the WOVR. It then will need a roadworthy to be registered.
If it is not entered into the WOVR, it is still registered.
After one of the previous hail storms in Melbourne, a work colleague had his car hail damaged. He claimed through insurance. They wrote it off (repairable write off) and he bought it back. The car did not leave his ownership. The insurance company paid him out, cancelled his comprehensive policy and issued a third party policy. A few weeks later he was done for driving an unregistered vehicle. Unbeknownst to him, the insurance company had put it on the "Written Off Vehicle Register", as they were supposed to do. He received no notification from any authority. It was his responsibility to find out.

I did ask re that Mick. Yes I could withdraw the claim but my Disco would not be covered by insurance for the pre exisiting damage making having comprehesive insuracne a total waste of money. That is very well documented by many poor sods who brought a bargin paid for years of insurnce only to find the patched up pannels not covered by the inurance they had paid for. I also agree once I take the word insurance out of it I will get a more reasonable repair price. Question is do that to mine or a new one with the 18K. Noted a white Rangie with almost as much damage as mine today. A significant number of options - Just a tough choice to make as I like mine.

At the assesment place they were actually using a dent removal process on one car at the waiting area to keep us entertained I think. Just like this

It was interesting to watch and clearly difficult to perfect. With several hundred to do it would takes weeks. It would be good for a few dents.

AFAIK the dent pulling method won't work on aluminium because it stretches on impact way more than steel.
A guy I know had his Hilux dimpled to the max in Eltham about 5 years ago. The panel beaters had it for less than a day pulling the dents out and it came back looking like new. Quite amazing.

Mitch hitch off. UHF off, Lams out, dual battery control............... Last drive this morning felt a bit naked [biggrin]
"Thanks for the Memories" played loud with kids hanging out the windows- Sorry Doncaster. Found a bump or two to play on much to the horror of passing traffic I assume.

I may be back. Did look at flying over to Perth to buy another with the bonus of a nice road trip but missed it as I want to have a quick look at the thousands of cars which will be at the Auctions over the next several weeks. A very white Rangie sports which has had a very pampered life + dozens of Discos will be joining mine.
Just in case your interested mine needs front control arms and irreparable puncture and my jack removed making it unroadworthy as is today. Fairly new steering rack, Did not get time to remove long range tank or digital radio. GPS. Blue tooth phone which is a shame for me bonus for who ever gets it

2009 Disco paid for by the insurance pay out now in my garage. Nice drive to Ballarat, with Freeways, Urban roads, Gravel Roads, Inner city and more enjoyed by a bloody L plater for its first outing. Did get a cuddle and thanks before I changed my pants post longest trip when I was not driving for about 35 years! Still shaking my head at the fact I was not driving.[biggrin]

First world problem! Called a poor sod who was on the other side of the world today for an urgent medical matter for a child. He is cross as I could not do the impossible. I am shell shocked as I would if I could. Car and hail made me a little uncomfortable, Phone calls made me cry for the pain a dad is feeling 1000s of miles from his child. Watching babies from sub Zero to older kicks me when they are seriously ill. Even tougher to image the pain/stress mum and dad feel. **** I/we am lucky!
