Trying to help my Mums partner find the spec of 4x4 he is after - which is quite particular and I’m struggling to find something suitable.

Requirements are:-

- 4x4 Extra cab prefered - NOT dual cab as he wants a tray long enough to sleep in.
- secondhand but only a few years old
- Japanese/Korean, not European.
- Base model MUST have wind up windows and manual locking (no idea why but it does)
- Cab chassis with alloy tray.
- Budget up $30 to $32K all up with Canopy but anything from $20K.

So, any ideas? I can’t seem to find anything with the basic features he is after. The Toyota Hilux Workmates I’ve found on line are only 4x2 - do the years do a 4x4 version in a single or extra cab?

Before anyone asks why to any of these questions, all you need to know is that he’s a crusty old fart that’s set in his ways, won’t take any form of feedback about what’s could be a better option, has his mind set on the above only, no correspondence will be entered into.... 😁

-Hi-lux does extra cab
-Manual locking can still be done...suppose you could put the remote in the glove box
- I think he will struggle finding one with wind up windows.
- <3yo might be tight on the budget for a Toyota

Carsales has a 2014 extra cab hilux for $29k. The others are >$35k

Pretty sure Mazda and Ford do an extra cab, not sure about other makes

Isuzu does a "Space Cab" DMAX. Dunno about manual windows though. EVERYTHING has electric theses days. Well, apart from Defenders...

We've taken a wrong turn (https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Isuzu-D-MAX-2013/OAG-AD-15468466/?Cr=18)

The Lux is the only one I know of with manual windows which (appears to be a) show stopper. You can always disconnect or disable central locking.

That almost fits the bill but has electric windows (I’m trying to convince him that they won’t break and the engine has far more electronics in it, but he’s a bit set in his ways)

I don’t think anyone wishes they still had an 85 Courier... 😉

Yikes, sorry but not a chance for soooo many reasons....

As long as he can put a key in the lock I think he’d be happy, just doesn’t like ‘blip blip’ things. A secondhand 4x4 version of the workmates with an extra cab seems to be a rare thing. He does have the money to buy a brand new one, so I may go ask Toyota if such a beast exists new then get the old fart to pony up a bit more but I suspect I’ll be on a hiding to nothing there. 😁

**** i would let him find his own car if he isn't open to things like cars having elec windows etc....

His wish list is about the same as mine, though given the money and space required I would love a 110 with a 300 tdi. Fully reconditioned , and sound proofed , that would be enough for me. I don't use much of the electronic stuff in the new car .

Why does his wish list make him any less worthy of my help just because he doesn’t want the same things?

Yes, he’s a stubborn old bugger, but is a nice guy with a heart of gold, so happy to help out as I can. He doesn’t know how to use the internet or even have a computer hence why I’m assisting [emoji4][emoji106]

I use the term affectionately - he may be set in his ways but he’s a nice old guy. [emoji4]

A little left field , I saw a Hiace van ( big bongo van ) with the hilux 4x4 running gear .
it was an import from NZ .

i want one .

i have no other options , except a Triton , will be a basic shirt box , it will be fine if he likes simple , there will be no comforts or extras . It will have powered newfangled winda’s .
i know , as I have one .
Would find it difficult to reccomend to someone I care about ......
An enemy - no probs !

Yep. I was positively dripping with envy. Pity they made so few of them. I would have crawled over broken glass for a van version.

I was holding out hope they would do a more modern version. I mean, they brought out the RTV, they had an AWD drivetrain to play with. Sheesh, I'll bet they would have found a market.

Buy a Delica.

Still, my BIL, who lives in Tokyo, has brought in a fancy version, I guess it's a cross between a Tarago and a HiAce. It is a fully fledged, Toyota built camper. It is 4WD. I hate it. He loves it. He plans to retire home soonish, and it will be his family's hone while he surfs.

Hmm I must be a old fart too. I don`t like electric windows or central locking in a 4wd either. In fact I like a 4wd that you can remove the battery whilst it is running and it won`t stop.

I have. The same people ( I think, Hilliers ) made a stunning Coupé as well. Ford were never good at taking hints.

What about a Defender, either a 120 with tray (a bit rare) or a 130 Double Cab & Tray [smilebigeye] in either 300TDI or TD5 should be able to get one around his budget, manual windows, key lock/unlock discs up front and some with disc rear.

cheers

What can a Delica tow? Needs to be able to tow either a small boat or a medium sized caravan.

Yes , I think so .
but as they are an import it’s hard to get the ‘rating’ or a solid spec . They are like a early Pajero driveline / chassis .

my sister really wants one , so my dad and her have been researching them . An old neighbour of mine had one and it certainly towed stuff fine - caravan , car trailers with approx 1220kg weight .

Having worked on and driven a few Delicas they're basically a hybrid related to both the Pajero and the Triton using either a 3.0 V6 or a 2.8 Tdi. Certainly they have the grunt to tow reasonable loads although the petrol version drinks like a fish. Quite a comfortable thing to drive for a medium sized 4WD van. I like the fact that the engine is out the front under a proper bonnet not jammed between the seats like in the L300.

Extended cabs of any variety are not far from being a special order. B in Law waited six months for a Hilux one. That would contribute to making the OPs specification almost impossible to fill. Probably easier to relent on the powr windows than anything else....
