Hi all,

I have a leak from the front output seal on the transfer case of my D3 - the leak has been there for a little while but has only started to leave marks on the concrete as of a couple of weeks ago.

I've been quote $800 to replace all 4 seals (the seals cost $50 max) so it appears there is a lot of labour involved and I'm looking to have a go myself. I have found a guide on the DiscoUK (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic47890.html) site, as well as teardown of the box (http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-range-rover-mark-iii-l322/41233-magna-steyr-dd295-transfer-box-teardown.html).

Just wanting to know a couple of things:

Has anyone here done it and how hard was it? I will be doing it in my driveway with a mate over a day, and it seems the hardest part will be removing the box?
What oil is used for the box? I have the LR part number but don;t want to spend $80 a litre if I don't have to.
Can the front casing be removed, seals changed, then the case halves put back together, the case flipped over and the rear half removed to change the seal? or do I have to pull all the innards out of the box?
Is there anything else I'm missing?

Now you may consider me brave/stupid but from what I've read I'm fairly confident I can change the seals myself. If i stuff up I can drive the box up to the local indy to fix my stuff up.

All help is appreciated!

Cheers, Dan

Or just put a tray under it.....That won't help much - its parked on a slope.

For fluid, use this - Ravenol TF-0870
It was designed by Ravenol to exceed the shell spec specifically for the Steyr transfer case used in our LRs, and is a lot cheaper than the LR product. I have a contact in QLD who can supply it if you run into trouble sourcing it. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2017/12/771.jpg

I used Royal Purple Synchro max from distributor in Melbourne although an AutoBarn store can get it for you

Other companies state their 75w 90 is suitable for the transfer case too, which it most certainly isn't.
Not saying the RP product isn't, but with no data available, I looked elsewhere.

I just went genuine given it’s not changed that often, but like the idea of the one you suggested [emoji106]

How did you go with this Disco-tastic?

My D3 has developed a similar problem and I'm considering having a go at this myself.
