"WATCH the highlights of DAKAR 2019 FREE and in HD on SBS daily at 6pm from Tuesday 8th January or streamed live via SBS Sport and SBS On Demand. Stage replay also available on SBS VICELAND."
Hopefully there won't be trouble finding it in the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) as SBS hasn't updated their's for this week yet, here's hoping for next week, nothing like a Govt run enterprise!
PS. Mods please change the thread title to something more suitable "The Dakar is starting" perhaps?
Cheers,
Randy

The commodore didn’t to half way.... stopped at stage 4 I think....
The hiluxes haven’t performed that well either... I think the leader is the last one in the top 10.
The 200’s is leading the T2 class though

A Hilux probably has more flex than a few of Land Rovers current lineup [emoji51][emoji38]

Yep and more flex than a 70 series. I'd be happy to own one of those IRS Dakar hiluxes.
A good race this year. I'd love to go see it one year.

What do you expect? If it was a race to Toorak then they would win!

From memory about the only thing Defender might bonnet and chassis...their best asset is the Land Rover V8 with their own (Bowler) reworked heads.

Not really about the only thing it shares with a Defender is the head lights. The bonnet is fibreglass and the Chassis is a D2 Chassis along with D2 axels.

I think they’re racing the wrong vehicles.
Based on what I’ve seen recently, a typical SUV fitted with child seat and driven buy a princess with a coffee appointment, might just take it out.[emoji41]

Most Bowler Wildcats were built on a tubular chassis and used Discovery 2 axles, transfer box and Defender gearbox. Allot were 4.0 ltr V8s with about 300bhp but there were some running 300tdi. One 300tdi finished 11th on the Dakar a while ago. At one time Bowlers were the most prolific finishers of any manufacturer on the Dakar.
Compared to others they were relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain. I raced a non Dakar spec one(pics below) in the UK for a few years and apart from an R380 letting go it was reliable. I was running a 5.2 John Eales Rover motor.
Sadly Drew Bowler died unexpectedly a few years ago but the company still carries on and now makes the Bowler Bulldog pictured below. It runs mostly standard RRS/Discovery 5 suspension and other LR running gear. A mate of mine just won the Moroccan Rally in one last year. I think they plan to do the Dakar at some point.
Paul Round made his own version of the Wildcat that used a BMW 6 cylinder diesel.

The Hilux and Toyota badges. Maybe the headlights, front panels, windshield etc... nothing else as every other vehicle racing in that class.

We pro'ly don't see as many Land-rovers in the Dakar since Drew Bowler's passing Bowler Offroad - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowler_Offroad). I remember being very impressed by them in the Dakar few years ago, there was a hole that a lot of cars were falling into and the spectators were helping them get out, this also happened to a Bowler, although it too needed help onto it's wheels, it then just drove out. Drew was a nice guy, I rang him once about the twin fuel pumps fitted to his TD5's, he was very helpful saying he didn't know the type off hand, but gave me his mechanic's number, so I could source one.

Did a few control points for the early "Wynns Safaris" in the 80's when Andrew Cowan was driving a Ralliart "Pajero". Paj in name only, those things were basically a 4WD Formula One.

There are only two that resemble Land Rovers. One of those is a Bowler (367) The other is 394, Described as a Disco, but looking like a Bowler as well (Ne ratez pas une soiree exceptionnelle : le jeudi 22 Novembre au soir ..... - Un Dakar pour les enfants hospitalises (http://www.defidakar.com/2018/10/ne-ratez-pas-une-soiree-exceptionnelle-le-jeudi-22-novembre-au-soir.html))

About Bowler (https://www.bowlermotorsport.com/about-us/)
The Bowler, Tomcat, Wildcat & Bulldog look like Defenders, the Nemesis and EXR look like Range Rover Sports. I'm not sure they did a Disco based version, maybe a one off as they do custom cars.
