Hi All,

So I've been thinking about purchasing a 4 door for a while now, and picked this up yesterday...

1990 Range Rover, 3.9 EFI - I am now the third owner.

You can see from the pictures - very faded paint, very dirty (filthy), some hail damage - overall cosmetically pretty poor.

It did come with the original jack... The gas struts from on the rear hatch are both missing, more specifically the brackets that attaches to the frame are long gone.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/129.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/JfRvC8)IMG_2495 (https://flic.kr/p/JfRvC8) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Head lining will need to be re-done:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/130.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/DxEUPg)IMG_2496 (https://flic.kr/p/DxEUPg) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

First job off the rank - I have had these lying around for about 12 months, and they too are filthy:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/131.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/21QmJLV)IMG_2477 (https://flic.kr/p/21QmJLV) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

I spent about 2 hours cleaning all 5 wheels, and now they look like this:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/132.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/21Qmj5F)IMG_2481 (https://flic.kr/p/21Qmj5F) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Second job - there was part of a roof rack on the front of the car.. The rear section was missing... The bolt heads appear to have rusted/broken off:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/133.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/227SMvf)IMG_2499 (https://flic.kr/p/227SMvf) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Out with the grinder and the 1/2 roof rack is now history:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/134.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/F4My1G)IMG_2502 (https://flic.kr/p/F4My1G) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Next job - wash, dry, wax, buff, vacuum... I still have a lot of cleaning to do, but the paintwork looks a lot better.. (It's never going to be perfect but I am happy with the results)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/135.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/F4LU8Y)IMG_2509 (https://flic.kr/p/F4LU8Y) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Interior after a quick vacuum, and clean:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/136.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/23csVsV)IMG_2512 (https://flic.kr/p/23csVsV) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

There are lot's of (hopefully) small jobs to do (head liner, missing seat belt, front driving lights, front fog lights, wiper arms, 1 x front blinker, gas struts, bumper corners, etc)... But I've made a good start.. [tonguewink]

Mechanically the two biggest jobs that I have discovered so far - there is leak in the power steering system (somewhere), and I need to check-out the cooling system...

Cheers,
GG.

Yep - hasn’t been registered since early 2000’s....

It drove 175km home (unregistered vehicle permit)... So hopefully nothing major to do, apart from already mentioned things...

Owner “just didn’t use it anymore” and “it uses too much petrol”

Lol - he should drive a 101... [emoji15][emoji6]

Looks a lot better after a good scrub :thumbsup: I seen that rangie advertised and thought it would have been a good project for someone if you got it for the right price.

I hope you didn't pay what he was asking for it initially but it's a lot better that the pics it was advertised with. Rangies kind of grow like mushrooms once you own one you get more (I currently have 6 and probably add a couple more, hopeless!!)

Nope - certainly didn’t pay what he was asking for it.. It had been advertised for a while, which probably helped in the negotiations.

I have 2 now - that’s enough (plus there is the 101, Perentie, 60 ‘88, ‘61 109, Stage One V8 Wagon)

Not at all! As with everything that I do - I am a novice, with big ideas and little skill! Lol

I plan to go over it again - that was just the first wash to get the worst of the crap off.

must be acrylic paint on it to come up like that. 2pack is usually pealing clear off in sheets. Its interesting to see it never appears to have had lpg fitted. The owner can't have been too poor ( LOL ). If only someone would re-make the interior plastics a lot of these old rangies would come up really nice with a little time and effort spent on them!

So today (pretty much all day) revolved around - investigating the cooling system... The car was a little hot when I got home, so I wanted to investigate this further..

As with any job I do on cars - if it's coming off, then it get's cleaned (and painted if required). Any faulty/perished parts will be replaced.

I had never taken one of these radiators out before - my, what a pain-in-the-arse this job is...

Today:
* Remove battery, clean-up clamps
* Remove coolant overflow tank
* Remove radiator hoses
* Remove radiator, radiator cowling
* Remove water pump, viscous fan
* Remove alternator
* Remove all associated belts
* Remove grill
* Remove head lights

Radiator top brackets - before:

Actually - no wonder the thing got hot:

I have a 1 year old water pump, viscous fan, fan blade & alternator off another 3.9 - which will get cleaned-up and installed in "Big Red"

Next few jobs:

* Tidy up grill
* Install water pump
* Install alternator
* Install new belts
* Replace head-lights
* Replace front side indicators (already have 2 brand new spares..)
* Replace all hoses
* Service: air filter, oil filter, engine oil, coolant, power steering fluid, etc..

Q: When installing the water pump, obviously I will use a gasket - but do I also need to use "gasket glue"? Do you need both or is it a matter of one or the other.

Homestar had a look at the vehicle - and I think he agrees that it's reasonably original, in good condition - it just needs some TLC.

Cheers,
GG.

A thin smear of gasket goo each side of a water pump gasket means it won't leak if you use it straight away, or loosen a single bolt around the water pump at a later date.

Yes, not a bad vehicle over all for what it will be used for. Original and unmolested. Usual stuff like hoses, belts and some other rubber components, but I don't think it will need anything major for the RWC. 👍

Should be a nice run around. 😊

I used to do mine every year when I was living in Brisbane, with the QLD heat and regular off-road work it saved me a few head gaskets over the journey. Agree money well spent.

Hi All,

I was already thinking about having the radiator professionaly cleaned - but when I read the below suggestions (and knowing that Rangie's have a tendency to run hot) - I dropped off the radiator to be tested/cleaned/rodded. Total cost of $140, including paint - and a 4 day turn around... So while that's away (and I'm waiting for other parts) - I've been busy cleaning, cleaning, cleaning - and doing some more cleaning.. [thumbsupbig]

This is what the front of the chassis looked like (before):
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/195.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/F8jsmq)IMG_2523 (https://flic.kr/p/F8jsmq) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

And after:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/413.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/22hGtW7)IMG_2545 (https://flic.kr/p/22hGtW7) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

I have started cleaning up the engine bay:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/414.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/23ngoHa)IMG_2543 (https://flic.kr/p/23ngoHa) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

All of these parts have been cleaned, ready to go back on:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/415.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2214v8M)IMG_2541 (https://flic.kr/p/2214v8M) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

The front grill was looking tired:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/416.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/23ctVmF)IMG_2505 (https://flic.kr/p/23ctVmF) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

So I washed it with soapy water, dried it with a clean cloth, the cleaned it with a scotch brite, rinsed it with clean water, dried it, and painted it...
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/417.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/23jEna3)IMG_2548 (https://flic.kr/p/23jEna3) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

I have a lot more cleaning to do - which I plan to do while I'm waiting for all of the parts to arrive... [biggrin]

Cheers,
GG.

Your timing cover looks to be in good condition from the pics, not too pitted which is common on old Rangies so it might have had some care in the past in regards to it's cooling system.

I've had them where there nearly pitted all the way through and borderline ready to leak!!

Did some jobs this weekend - every little bit counts, one job at a time.

I'm still waiting for parts - but I am trying to keep the momentum up..

The drivers side mud flap was missing, so I ordered 2 x new mud flaps. I removed the passenger side easily enough, but (thinking that it would be a quick job) - I came up against rivnuts on the drivers side.. [bawl]

The other side of the rivnut had a domed head - not a nut or hex head...

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/489.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/DNtu7x)IMG_2553 (https://flic.kr/p/DNtu7x) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Firstly I tried to drill them out, and when that wasn't getting anywhere - I cracked it and got out the grinder...

Little fellas didn't last too long:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/490.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/22nHH1w)IMG_2555 (https://flic.kr/p/22nHH1w) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

What was left over - I will keep the passenger side one as a spare. Hopefully the new ones are good quality, but you never know with replacement parts - unfortunately my experience is that new (rubber) parts often don't last that long..

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/491.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/22nHvef)IMG_2558 (https://flic.kr/p/22nHvef) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

And both sides now fitted:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/492.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/FjxoGQ)IMG_2567 (https://flic.kr/p/FjxoGQ) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Next up - remove the front number plate (haven't done the rear yet), and also remove the fog lights:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/493.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/DNs8E2)IMG_2560 (https://flic.kr/p/DNs8E2) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Also remove both side indicators, and both "end" (plastic) bumper corners... Wasn't that a fun job:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/494.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/FjxTzu)IMG_2552 (https://flic.kr/p/FjxTzu) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

The plan was to remove the bumper so that I could paint it.. I found (and removed) the numerous screws, nuts & bolts... Until I got to the 2 large screws that hold on the front number plate bracket... These were the last 2 that I needed to remove - and both of them had burred heads on them... Grrrr

I tried an impact driver, freeze spray, WD-40, the biggest screw driver that I had... Nothing was moving them - and I didn't want to drill them out..

So the next best thing was..

Wash the bumper, and scotch brite it to rough it up:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/495.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/JvwsKT)IMG_2570 (https://flic.kr/p/JvwsKT) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Mask, mask, mask it up:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/496.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/FjxbQJ)IMG_2572 (https://flic.kr/p/FjxbQJ) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

And paint the thing in place!

Remembering that this is far from a concourse car or even a nut & bolt restoration. It's meant to be a run'around car.... I'm quite pleased with the results.

I also spent 2-3 hours cleaning the underside of the car - mainly so that I can locate a few oil leaks, but also so that it will be easier to work on in the future:

It's a weird feeling standing underneath a hoist with a car on it... I've never had a hoist before - and it makes me nervous. If the thing failed - I'd be a mashed potatoes.

You'll learn to trust it - if you make sure its solid on there a few inches above the ground you're fine. Once you get it just clear of the ground, shake the **** out if the car - if it doesn't move you're fine. Almost all hoist accidents are due to incorrect placement on the pads, not from them failing - that almost never happens, and when it does it's usually a cheap Chinese hoist, not Italys finest. 👍

Hi All,

So I've been trying to do a little bit each night - no huge jobs, but they all add up.

You will remember that the front looked like this - I'm talking specifically about the broken indicator, and dirt around the head light recess:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/494.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/FjxTzu)IMG_2552 (https://flic.kr/p/FjxTzu) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

I removed the broken indicator - but it took quite some time to remove the glue from the panel... I also polished the area thoroughly - and I am very happy with the results. In the below photo I have not polished the bonnet edge, nor have I polished the entire panel - just the area around the blinker.

I decided that even though nobody will ever see the area behind/around the headlight, that I'd give that a quick clean also...

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/601.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/22si4yL)IMG_2585 (https://flic.kr/p/22si4yL) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Again - this is never going to be a concourse car, but it is going to be a very tidy run-around car... SWMBO even said: "wow - it's really taking shape, maybe I shouldn't drive it!"

On another note - and this relates to the argument "do I buy parts from overseas OR locally"... I had purchased a lot of parts locally, but also a few from overseas.. I went to fit some of the overseas parts the other day - and they don't fit at all. I neded up taking the old parts & the OS parts into Dave from British Car Components in North Melbourne - we compared the parts and put simply, I've been sent the wrong parts from OS. I've ordered replacement parts from Dave and will have them today - now that's what I call SERVICE. I double checked my original order with the original supplier - and they have not supplied what I ordered. Sure I might have saved a few dollars by ordering OS, but the parts are wrong which is causing a delay... From now on - unless there is a huge cost saving, I'm going to buy local. I can't thank Dave enough for his help & prompt service. [thumbsupbig]

Cheers,
GG.

A few small jobs done last night:

I am replacing the front wiper arms/blades with new units, but apparently the rear wiper arm is NLA - so I sanded it back and painted it. While I was at it - I also painted the 3 x nuts that hold the wiper arms on.

Also, the top brackets that hold on the gas struts for my tailgate are missing. I sourced the brackets from a wrecker, sanded them back and painted them.

(The missing or damaged gas strut brackets seems to be an issue - my other Range Rover has home made brackets on it, so those must have broken at some stage also - a design flaw I guess)

And more polishing. To be honest the photograph makes it look better than it is - but you get the idea. I have polished everything forward of the windscreen in this photo. You can see that the drivers door is lighter compared to the bonnet/front guard.

You have to love the way old acrylic laquer shines back up. You have to keep at it sadly otherwise it turns chalking again. You can't do that with the modern 2packs paints as the clear starts pealing off in sheets.

What sort of black did you use on the front bumper :confused: I have had good luck in the past with priming them and painting them satin black ( or even using the plastic dyes).

On the Rangey here I just pulled the plastic off though. I figured it should look old and metal not modern and plasticky :D

Hi Shane,

The metal bumper - I haven't painted, I just washed it and gave it a cut & polish.

The plastic bumper & grill - I used a product caled: "Dupli-Color Trim & Bumper Paint". It's in a spray can and the blurb says:

Looking to renew and protect weathered or discoloured bumpers, mouldings and rubber strips? Dupli-Color Bumper Coating offers a protective coating, solid colour and superior adhesion to thermoplastic rubber and polyurethane bumpers without flaking, chipping or peeling.

311g
Renews & protects discolored bumpers
For use on thermoplastic & polyurethane bumpers
Superior adhesion
Provides a uniform solid color

Only time will tell how well it responds to UV...

Cheers,
GG.

PS - I washed the plastic, dried it, and the scotch brighted it to roughen it up before I painted it (multiple coats). I didn't use a primer because I figured that the surface was already "rough"...

Yes, that stuff is good. I think that is the one I used when I tried to repair the dash in my old Citroen CX. It used typical (ie: woeful quality) plastic ... even worse than the range rover. I bevelled the cracks and glued them together with plastex and primed and painted the dash in the same way you have done. The paint has held up well, however the dash just cracked again beside the old cracks (I think it's stress relieving itself when the dashboard expands and gets hot in the sun). The bumpers I repaired and painted with plastic primer and painted with standard arcylic laquer paint.

Hi All,

An update on this weekends work... Sometimes I wonder why I love Landy's so much - and often I question my sanity because of it..

Let's start off with the bad - the things that went wrong, before I get onto the work completed:

TAILGATE #1
My top tailgate didn't have the brackets that you attach the gas struts to - easy fix, I purchased 2 x brackets from a wrecker. These brackets were from the same model year as mine.
When I went to install the brackets - noticed that the existing holes in the tailgate didn't match up with the bracket... So either the bracket is wrong OR the tailgate has been modified? No real way of telling.
In true Land Rover fashion - I modified the bracket to fit (therefore no extra holes needed drilling).. Problem solved.

TAILGATE #2
Then I installed the 2 x brand new tailgate gas struts. Everything lines up, looks great - but the tailgate won't close... Hmmm? WT?
Gas struts are too long, meaning the tailgate can't close by about 2 inches...
Look across at my 2 door - the tailgate has modified (homemade) brackets on it... Hmmm
Swap the NEW gas struts onto the 2 door - tailgate now opens shorter, but opens and closes fine.
Put the 2 x old struts from the 2 door on the 4 door - and the tailgate now opens and closes fine... Problem solved.

DASH MAT
The dash on the 4 door is quite worn - it's been weathered, is still functional - but looks pretty ugly.
Cheap solution - buy a dash mat.. I've never been a huge fan of dash mats, but I figured - it would look ok AND prevent the dash getting any worse.
Went to install the dash mat - in no way will it fit.. Wrong shape, size - luckily I didn't cut any of the tags off - looking at the tags, it's for a Discovery... (Not what I ordered)
So I will be speaking to the supplier today...

ALTERNATOR
The current alternator isn't the correct one - and it explains why the Tacho doesn't work (it's not even wired up). The existing alternator had a weird bolt with a spacer on it to make it work.
I have a spare 3.9 V8 here, so I grabbed the alternator off that... Thinking a 3.9 alternator is a 3.9 alternator, I'll swap it over.
The spare 3.9 alternator won't fit - the brackets are all wrong...
So I put the old alternator back on, and will seek further advice... Homestar...? [bigsad]

SIDE BLINKERS
Went to fit up the side blinkers - everything seemed ok, until I went to plug them into the existing wiring loom... The bullet heads are too small on the new lights...
Luckily I had some spare bullet heads left over, so crimped some new (larger) heads on.. Problem fixed.

RADIATOR HOSE
As part of the general clean-up, I replaced all radiator hoses... All of the new ones work fine - apart from one that is simply way to short.. It's the hose that goes from the top drivers side of the radiator, across to the inlet manifold?
Anyway - I kept the old hoses and simply re-used it.. (It did look like it was in good condition)

SEAT BELT BUCKLE
One of the rear seat belt buckets is broken.. So I purchased a NOS original part, went to fit it up and... It doesn't fit.
Not only is the buckle too short - the seat belt won't clip into it anyway... So clearly another wrong part... Grrr

SHOCKS
Some of the shock bushes are badly worn - so I purchased a complete set of bushes (top & Bottom) to replace them.
Starting on the rear - first problem is that I simply cannot undo the bottom nut.. I've tried everything to stop the shock from spinning, but I'm having no luck..
Managed to get the top "eye" off without an issue.. However I think that the shocks are non-standard, because the new bushes are way too small.
Also the existing bushes in the eye have metal on the inside & outside of the bush, much like a chassis bush on a Series Land Rover...
I know that the previous owner towed, so I'm guessing that the shocks have been replaced with something non-standard.
I think that I will now replace the 2 x rear shocks, going back to standard - cutting the bottom nut off.. Grrr

HEAD LIGHT
I purchased 2 x brand new headlights.. Fitted them up without an issue, however one of them burnt out.... No idea what happened there...

HEAT
Yep it was getting a little warm in the shed... I noticed it sitting on 42c at one point, here it is sitting on about 39c
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/819.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/FxcoVY)IMG_2611 (https://flic.kr/p/FxcoVY) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

REAR WINDSCREEN WIPER
You can't buy new rear windscreen arms - I found this out by ordering a complete arm/blade set-up (from overseas) and it simply does not fit.
I then ordered a new blade - which won't fit onto the old arm...
I think that I am going to have to modify the old arm, to fit the new blade... I've put this to the side for the moment.

Anyway - rant over... I think that the heat got too me...

Time for some good news.

CLEANING

ORIGINAL:
I think that the car is mostly original - after cleaning the underside of the car (as much as I can be bothered) - you can see markings on the front diff, inside of panels, etc.
This looks like a original Land Rover muffler (94?):

I will be chasing up more parts today...

Apart from the roof - I have washed & polished the entire car... I've cleaned-up the engine bay a bit, and the underside as well... For now I don't intend to do any more cleaning.

Happy with the progress, but just frustrated with parts not fitting... I have ordered all parts based on the VIN# / Year, yet some parts just aren't correct...

Cheers,
GG.

The Bosch alternator conversion was a very popular one, as parts are/were easily available from wrecking yards etc. To make the tacho work you need to open it up and solder a lead out to one of the three solder joints of the field windings. This will run your tacho nicely. Some aftermarket Bosch pattern alternators have this terminal (W) provided, as did XE and XF Falcon alternators.

Nice job! I admire your patience & persistence.

I broke a rear panhard rod on my 82 model where it mounts between the bushes to the chassis. Maybe worth checking??
Fortunately at the time I was going very slowly & he resultant rear wheel steering didn't do too much damage. Afterwards I upgraded both with rods from a 110 which have a bigger stud.

There has been some more progress on "Big Red" this week. Homestar came over for a look on Saturday, and had a bit of a look - and did a few jobs also! [thumbsupbig]

Sorry - no pictures (I will try and take some tonight). Here's a list of the things that have happened in the last week:

* Old rear shocks removed (thanks to Mr Grinder)
* New rear shocks fitted
* Rear Windscreen arm/wiper fitted
* Driving lights modified (the ones supplied did not have the correct fittings on them) and installed
* Lower bumper re-installed
* New Front Bumper Corners installed
* Grill re-installed
* Alternator pulled apart and cleaned, "W" terminal wired-up.
* Cooling system filled and tested - NO leaks! [thumbsupbig]
* Passenger door adjusted - it opens easily now (although it's still a bit dented!)
* Low coolant alarm wiring repaired.
* Kick Panels & lower section of dash removed (as part of chasing some wiring issues) - cleaned up well.
* Removed the rat/mouse nest from behind the dash/ventilation system... That should make the car smell nicer.. :bat:

Now the things that didn't go to plan - sometimes it feels like "Big Red" is fighting me every step of the way:

* The Tailgate lock isn't working - I had suspected wiring (which was an issue) but it appears that the mechanism itself is broken/faulty..
* Alternator wired up correctly - however the tacho still doesn't work... Homestar pulled apart the dash board / instrument panel, but was unable to work out what was wrong...
* The Air Conditioning isn't working - Homestar checked the entire system (relays, wiring, etc) - but was unable to work out what exactly was wrong...

What's left - these items are either service items OR required for the RWC:
* Replace rear seat belt (easy)
* Head Lining
* Drain cooling system and replace with all new coolant
* Engine oil / diff oil / trans fluid / filters.
* Replace faulty head light
* Small rust repair (started fabricating a panel)
* Air Con - have the system looked at / re-gassed.
* Front parker light / rear break light (hopefully bulbs)

And these things are more cosmetic
* Repair centre console (found a video on youtube on how to do this)
* Replace a few interior light/door sensors
* Repair centre arm rest
* Repair Hi-Low knob
* Re-install kick panels & dash
* Polish the roof

Pics to follow over the next few days.. It was a bit hot over the last 3 days (40+ in the shed) - so I only worked on Big Red on Saturday... The good news is though - jobs are still getting done, one step at a time...

In relation to the Tacho, Homestar can explain it better - but he wired up the W terminal on the alternator and traced the wiring all the way through the system... Put simply - the tacho doesn't move from 0..

In relation to the Air conditioning, again Homestar can explain it better - but he traced all of the wiring, tested all of the relays, and the clutch isn't engaging... The fans run... Could it be that the system is out of gas, and it won't engage because of this?

If anybody has any tips on the tacho issue OR the air-con issues, feel free to post up some suggestions..

Cheers,
GG.

I can throw a shot of bang gas into the A/C if you feel like a drive to Ballarat at some point. I can even pressure/leak test with nitrogen now ( Total Tools have rent free bottles finally).

With regards to testing the electrical side. Just short the swithc on the receiver drier. What it does is cut the compressor out if there is to little or to much pressure in the A/C system (so shuts it down to protect itself). Don't run the system with the switch shorted. If the clutch thumps in on the compressor, that is all you need to know.

Switch on receiver drier was open, but bypassing this didn't help. The relay that drives the clutch is all ok - the issue is coming from the ground wire that activates the relay - this isn't just a black wire, it comes from somewhere else I couldn't identify. The RAVE manual on hand didn't show any details of the AC system, so I stopped when I got this far. Everything else checked out ok.

Bypassed this to run the compressor - no banging, it spins fine, but nothing gets cold, I'm guessing whatever was in there has leaked out but from where who knows.

The rest of the system and wiring all seem fine - the condenser fans come on when the AC is switched on and the idle up on the engine works too, it's just the compressor clutch not coming in as it should - not sure what drives the negative side of the coil. I can make it work no dramas, but rather than bypassing things to do this I'd prefer to find out where this comes from and fix it properly.

If anyone has a wiring diagram of the AC system for one of these I'd love to see it.

Cheers.

Re the tacho, yes - the W terminal is wired in and working, and is up at the instrument cluster, but the tacho itself seems stuffed. I pulled the cluster out as the tacho was sitting on 6,000RPM - so at full deflection with no power applied. Needle was stuck there. I moved it with my finger and if you move it to 3000 (12 o'clock) it falls to zero, but anything past that and it will fall to full deflection at 6000. No movement of all of any kind - guessing the unit itself has gone to god.

If you ran a hot wire directly to the compressor clutch and it didn't "thump" into action. The clutch on the compressor is dead :( If it's just a sanden SD7 ... I'm sure you can grab one from any parts rangie around.

Hi Shane,

I'll have a look tonight to see what compressor it is... I might take you up on the offer - my plan is to get a RWC first, and then I might come for a drive up to Ballarat!

No worries, if you do "open" the A/C up. Buy a bunch of 'O'rings and check every connection you can find (and replace the Orings). I found 1/2dozen munched Orings and a couple completely missing in the Rangie here :o

Also check the back of the service plug caps for Orings. This is where I reckon mine almost always leak from (the service valves)

Hi Shane,

I had a look at the compressor last night - it has "A" and "B" stamped on the top of it:

And "709" stamped on the side:

Is that a Sanden SD7 that you mention? (I couldn't find any other identifying marks)

Here is a picture of the alternator - cleaned up and wired up:

Stripped off all of these parts - while homestar was checking wiring - so gave them a good clean:

Removed this from behind the dash - a rats (or mouse) nest... Lot's of rat crap, and the smell was rather... Unpleasant:

Last night I was working on another project, so didn't get much done (apart from the rear seat belts)..

Yes that looks like a sanden SD series compressor to me ( have a look on ebay for sanden sd, they should look the same ).

I did that to one of my seats belts a couple of weeks ago. It happens when you try to fold the seats back down with the seat belts in the way. The seatbelt does still work, but it doesn't look pretty!

When you said 'thump' I thought you meant a bad thump. The clutch clicks in no dramas, there's nothing wrong with that. As I said, there's a wire to the relay whose other end is a mystery to me, the clutches non operation has nothing to do with a defective clutch. The lack of cold will no doubt be lack of gas in the system.

Hi Stuart,

I got the seat belt from a Wrecking Notice here on AULRO - there is a guy in Hastings (Vic) wrecking a '93 RRC.. But as I snapped it off him - I doubt that he has another one..

I recommend that you try a wrecker. There are some Land Rover specific wreckers out there:

Triumph Rover Spares - The World's Largest Land Rover Dismantler (http://www.triumphroverspares.com.au/)

Land Rover parts and servicing specialists - British Off Road - Sunshine Coast (http://www.britishoffroad.com/)

https://www.allfourx4.com.au/

I have sourced parts from all 3 in the past.

Oh this is an easy fix then.... Take a piccie of it and I'll tell you where that wire goes on the '92 model here. The sensible way to wire the compressor clutch is through the switching contact inside the relay back to a grunty 12volt source. The actual side of the relay the drives the switching contact, should have 12volts back to the thermister in the evaporator, however it's earth wire will run through through the receiver drier switch then to earth. So if the pressure contact in the receiver drier opens, the earth to the compressor relay will be interrupted, shutting off the compressor.

This way you get power to the compressor and interruption for fault conditions using just one relay.

Shane L.

Already explained which wire - I can make it work easily but I’d prefer to know where this wire comes from in the loom. It’s the low side (negative) supply to the coil of the clutch relay - it doesn’t just run to a ground, it appears to be switched from elsewhere. It’s Grey I think but can’t recall the trace colour. Positive to the clutch coil comes from the receiver drier switch, main power feed into relay comes from the correct fuse which is fine and the output obviously goes to the clutch. Everything but that ground wire is working correctly. I can’t just ground it as then the only thing that will stop the clutch from engaging is the switch in the receiver dryer. I’m guessing some part of the AC on/off system switches it, but everything else works properly when the AC is switched on - condenser fans run fine and the idle up on the engine works well too.

Cheers.

Hi All,

Well it's been way too long for an update - I have been busy working on the Perentie & 101 for Corowa & Cooma.. Now that those events are over, it's time to get back onto the Rangie... My daily car has to go in for repairs in a few weeks time, so the pressure is on to get the Rangie on the road...

First job over the weekend - replace all of the door/bonnet light switches:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/321.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/25UesxC)IMG_3285 (https://flic.kr/p/25UesxC) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Next job was to clean-up more of the engine bay, before re-fitting the washer bottle. I now know that the vehicle was built in December 89:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/322.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/HQbGNW)IMG_3287 (https://flic.kr/p/HQbGNW) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Washer bottle re-fitted (that was fun doing it on my own, but I got there in the end):

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/324.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/HQbGgJ)IMG_3289 (https://flic.kr/p/HQbGgJ) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Centre Console repaired - a common repair that I found on you tube, basically you pop rivet in some aluminium to strengthen the front panel of the centre console:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/326.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/25Ues91)IMG_3286 (https://flic.kr/p/25Ues91) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

Also managed to remove the head liner:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/327.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/25UesRU)IMG_3284 (https://flic.kr/p/25UesRU) by Grey Ghost (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156172026@N07/), on Flickr

I am trying to work out if I want to "tidy up" the roof while the head liner is out, and try and remove some of the larger hail damage. The options are:

* Use a hammer and dolly.
* Use a recent ebay purchase - "hail damage" repair tool... (I have already tried this and to be honest, the results weren't that great)
* Some surface bog and re-paint the roof

Not sure what to do yet... Obviously I don't have to repair the roof for registration, but it's one of those jobs that once the head-lining goes back in, deep down I know that I'll never get to..

I also installed a small plate - rust repair in the drivers foot well, the only rust that I have found so far.

I also re-installed the passenger side kick panel, instrument binnacle & instrument hood.

What's left before registration?
* Get the head-lining recovered & re-installed
* Power Steering Leak

What's left after registration?
* Do something about the roof
* Replace the passenger side door
* Look at the air-conditioning

The pressure is on though - I need this car in a few weeks time. At this point I think that the biggest delay will be the head-lining. I have found a local re-trimmer, let's just hope that he is available.

Cheers,
GG.

Not sure but I don't think the roof unbolts like the earlier models.

Isn't 89 when they went to a monocoque(sp) body?

Everything else looks great.

Aren't those washer bottles a pain to refit? I have to refit mine after rust repairs under it.

Hi All,

I purchased a seal-kit for the power steering box, with the thought that when I send the car off for a RWC - I would ask the mechanic to fit the kit, as it's above my skills.

On the weekend (Dave) BlkKnight came over and inspected the power steering box, and suggested that the box was leaking from the top - which indicated problems with the bearings and that I would need a new or rebuilt power steering box.

Luckily for me - I just happened to have a second hand power steering box sitting on the shelf (it came with my 101, was never used but the condition was unknown).

So:
1) Dave stripped down the spare box and gave it a complete inspection.
2) Cleaned-up some of the services
3) Re-Assembled the box - with replacing all of the seals

I:
1) Sanded back the pitman arm & steering box
2) Masked it up
3) Painted them - first coat.

Here are some pictures - before:

The next steps are:

* Check my painting - make sure that I haven't missed any bits
* Second Coat
* Remove old steering box (I'm guessing that is going to be fun - NOT)
* Install new replacement steering box

Meanwhile the headlining & sun visors are being dropped off for recovery in the next few days...

Fingers crossed I might just make the dead line...

Cheers,
GG.

Hi GG,

Was there any reason you didn't replace the Pitman Arm ball joint? did it appear sloppy at all?

I'm asking because I've got lots of slack in the my steering and I'm not sure which job to do first, the steering box or the pitman arm ball joint - I'm not really looking forward to either job given my lack of correct tools (and knowledge) and i've read they are both diffucult jobs!

Tim.

Hi Tim,

There didn't appear to be any slack in the ball joint - in fact it was quite tight. I will replace the boot, and re-grease - but it looked okay to me...

I am hoping to change over the steering box sometime late next week... Fingers crossed!

Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,

Quite a bit of work done over the weekend, in fact I spent most of the weekend working on the Range Rover...

I removed all of the sill strips so that I could give them a polish, and also remove the old sound deadening & carpet:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/566.jpg

And here is an example of one of them after I polished it:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/567.jpg

Here is some of the crappy old carpet - it was smelly, damp, had rust stains - time for the bin:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/568.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/569.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/570.jpg

I found some surface rust in both the passenger and drivers foot wells - so I sanded the surface rust back as best I could, and then treated it with a rust converter paint:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/571.jpg

And then painted it with some red rust paint - I didn't care that it wasn't a perfect colour match, because it is going to be covered up by sound deadening anyway...

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/572.jpg

Here is the sound deadening - on the passenger side:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/573.jpg

Here is the sound deadening - on the drivers side:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/574.jpg

Next - re-install the sill covers and new carpet matts installed - passenger side, drivers side, rear seat:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/575.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/576.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/577.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/578.jpg

Next - fix the centre arm rest... The screws were missing entirely, I also needed to use longer screws because of wear and tear. All fixed now:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/579.jpg

Dash Matt installed - it came with Velcro strips that were next to useless, so I also added some double-sided tape. Time will tell how well it works:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/580.jpg

Next - I found a 20cm hole in the floor, roughly under the drivers seat. Cleaned-up the hole, cut a plate and pop-riveted it on:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/581.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/582.jpg

I also re-installed the lower dash panel & drivers side kick plate.

Last jobs before RWC:

* Re-install head lining (once I pick it up from the trimmer)
* Fashion a battery clamp
* Replace some light bulbs on the drivers side rear
* Steering box replacement.

Getting there....

Cheers,
GG.

Coming along nicely - where did you obtain the new matts? Fleabay?

grey_ghost
23rd April 2018, 01:25 PM
Yep - $135 from memory. They aren't perfect (they don't have the holes like the originals, and they are not a perfect fit compared to the originals - but for $135, I'm happy).

Cheers,
GG.

PS - There is a guy on here selling complete carpet sets, much better quality - but at this point in time it's nothing that I need to do...

"Big Red" is now ready for a RWC... Another big weekend (Friday night, Saturday & Sunday) and he's ready... Jobs done over the weekend include (from memory anyway, it was a bit of a blur):

Fabricate, paint & install a battery bracket:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/934.jpg

Install the new head lining, Jesus handles, Sun Visors, Interior Lights & Covers and Speakers:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/935.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/04/936.jpg

No pictures of the below:

Install reconditioned steering box (twice, it's a long story but it's all adjusted up now)
Replace Spark Plugs
Replace HTC Leads
Replace Oil Filter
Drain/Flush Engine Oil
Clean Oil Cap (came up rather well)

BlkKnight helped with all of the mechanical stuff - I did all of the cosmetic stuff.
Ringing the mechanic today to book it in for a RWC... [thumbsupbig]

Cheers,
GG.

Hi All,

So "Big Red" is back from the local mechanic, and I now have a RWC in hand... What did he initially fail it on?

* Speedo - I knew that the speedo was a little suspect, because when you started the car in park the speedo would show 20kmh while stationary... However once you got over 60 - the speedo seemed to work okay.. And it's a Landy - so who needs a speedo? Well apparently I do for the RWC! I managed to source a second hand instrument binnacle from Ebay, and got it installed. The good news is - I now have a tacho as well.. The tacho in my original instrument binnacle didn't work, so 2 birds fixed with one stone!

* Passenger door - the passenger door was damaged, and opened correctly (no sagging), so I thought that it would pass the RWC. However I hadn't noticed that the door did have a tear in it - and the mechanic knocked that back. I had bought a 2nd hand door (wrong colour), and was always going to install that later... So the door was painted and installed.

Here is a picture of the car when I inspected it:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/464.jpg

Painting the spare door:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/465.jpg

The car needs another good clean & polish, but here she is:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/466.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/467.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/468.jpg

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/469.jpg

In this pic the colour match looks poor, but interestingly in real life it looks closer:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/05/470.jpg

Anyway - I can't wait to get the club permit and start using it on the weekend.

Cheers,
GG.

the boss women here gives good feedback..... I took her car last weekend as the old Rangie costs so much to drive any distance. 10minutes out of town the phone rings "The door won't open" ..... "Try harder" I say. the drivers door doesnt' stick as such. But the bitch of a thing requires you to put your finger behind the top edge of it and pull it open most of the time. I'm guessing it "relaxes" into a groove worn into the catch pin, so it needs to roll up and over it to open.

fast forward 3minutes .... the phone rings "The car won't start" .... "what do you mean it always starts ?". I hear it cranking cranking in the background... " rrr, rrr, rrr ............................. stop ............................. rrr, rrr, rrr" .................................. stop ................................ rrr, rrr, rrr .................. stop .... etc" What are you doing? You know how that car starts, we lived in the damn thing for 6months last year. It'll either start first grunt of the starter ............... Or it cranks for a solid 6seconds before it catches..... So she cranks it more than 2 seconds .... and wow, the damn thing starts" ............................... She doesn't like the fact the plastic on the door trim handles is broken .... and it cuts her. It also really ****es her off the interior interior lights don't work ( pffff.... bull****, they work so well, I removed all the globes to turn the damn things off ).

She is also far than impressed the back window doesn't stay up ( NEVER leave those damn things open when your moving the car around, the bouncing of the glass fatigues and breaks the ball joint off window side with a few short minutes ............................... Guess how I know this [bigsad] ). The central locking, it drives her nuts the doors never unlock properly. She doesn't appreciate my idea of "why would I ever lock it? If you never lock it you don't have to worry about unlocking it".

Why can't I get a decent car like everyone else ? She doesn't see my point of view that it's the best ****box I've ever owned. It does everything and anything I want it to do ... it goes anywhere, tows anything ... always starts, always gets us home ..... What else could anyone want from a car ?

Gee's, women right? You just can't please them.

Hi All,

It's been a bit of a gap between updates on "Big Red" - too many other projects.. [tonguewink]

Anyway - I had the issue a few months back which was a suspect the fuel pump, which has since been replaced. The car has been driving great since then. [smilebigeye]

Since the day that I bought this car - it has had an unfortunate smell in it.. I suspect because it lived outside on a farm, and rats and mice had gotten into it.

So far I have:

* Steam cleaned the seats and carpet - helped a little bit.
* Removed the underlay carpet from the front foot wells - helped quite a bit.
* Removed the cowling around the steering column and vacuumed it - helped a bit (was a rats nest in there)
* Installed numerous air fresheners - helped a little bit.

But the smell would always come back - especially on a hot day.

I had posted up on another thread - how do you replace the bonnet scuttle filters, and i finally got around to doing that yesterday.

Firstly - removing the various plastic bits is easy, but delicate as the plastic is old, weathered and brittle... I managed to snap one of the plastic knobs on one of the pieces.. The part is NLA - I used some super glue on it but who knows how long it will last. Here is a picture of the parts removed - prior to sanding & painting:

https://i.imgur.com/GfgwTuW.jpg

3 Coats of paint later:

https://i.imgur.com/S0CMc1N.jpg

Oh - here are the filters (picture taken from the ebay ad):

https://i.imgur.com/rt2LNTN.png

When I removed the plastic covers - my vehicle did NOT have the filter... I had hoped that the filters would be there, and the source of the smell..

Anyway - I got the vacuum out again, and remove some more rat **** - this time from the outside of the vehicle pointing inwards..

And here is everything re-installed (filters added):

https://i.imgur.com/hRPiwni.jpg

I also removed the entire lower dash from the vehicle and cleaned it, removing even more rat ****...

I didn't drive it but it smells a hell of a lot better now... [thumbsupbig]

Cheers,
GG.

Good work.
For the benefit of others - the filter medium should be readily available off the roll at Clark Rubber - is at my local store in Myaree.
It looks about the same density as the original (very porous) and I wonder occasionally if I should fit something to cull out more insects etc?
