EPB Electronic Park Brake release. RRS MY12

Ive heard that the EPB can lock on and can be manually released by pulling a cable located below the center console.
Ive found lots of info & videos on this for Disco 4 & RRS to 2009 but not my 2010-2012 SDV6 .

I want to try this before I get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Tried removing the console today but can’t get it off without fear of breaking it .
Does anyone know if the front section is held on with clips or are there screws somewhere I can’t see. Photo attached with it almost off.

The cable should be under the cup-holders unless under the cubby box, not the gear selector, as it needs to be readily accessible.

The whole console should be removed if wanting to detach the gear selector section.

I suspect there is a removable tab in the bottom of the cup-holders as exists in my my12 RR with the same cup-holders.

Thanks Graeme but seems the RRS 2010-12 is different. The cup holders in D4 are across the console whereas the RRS they run front to rear on passenger side. There is a small round inspection cap in the cup holders but that just gives access to the cup holders sliding lid. The EPB cable is almost directly below the EPB leaver (just behind the Gear selector) so the entire console cover needs to come off to access it. Anyway I can now access within 3 mins I reckon so will post Photos and description how to shortly.

I did this at home just in case I need to know how to "one day"
IMPORTANT , before you start , chock the wheels as the car will be in neutral and you are about to release the park brake.

Tools needed are a medium Phillips Driver & a couple of trim removal tools ( I now keep these in the boot as it seems many things 1st require trim removal). Having done the entire Go to Wo procedure it can be done 5 -10 minutes. See attached photos with captions for steps. Note some force is required to remove the console.

Did you spot a gear-lever release tab on the right rear corner of the selector mechanism that allows the gbox to be pulled out of Park without battery power?

Your cup-holders looked to be the same as in the RR 8-speed but the RR's are flat and have a much larger removable plate in the bottom to allow access the gearbox park release lever, so are quite different.

Graeme , No I was only focused on the EPB. Also didn’t know there was such a thing as the gear lever release tab.... Is it visible in the photo ? ,is it the Green plastic bit.

I can't spot the green bit but I would expect it to be just under the lip at the RR of the gearshift assembly.

Edit. Not the green object in the top right of your picture as it will be part of the lever assembly.

I had mine lock on just before Christmas (RRS2011) - You will here the brake winding in and out along way before the mechanism will finally jam on the end of the thread due to the Handbrake brake pads being worn out. This was caused by the previous owner always driving off and letting the hand brake auto disconnect - this is not good for them!!

I had a lot of trouble - mine was stuck in my car port jammed on. I could not get the center console out as you have said you need special trim tools and did not know about the hole next to the cup holder. It requires alot of force and I could not grip it enough to reef it up. Thanks for the images.

I was able to feed two heavy gauge hooks though the loop from just taking out the gear stick knob and with two people on either side in the passenger and driver seat with a peace of timber hooked to the top of the hooks then pushed up was able to release it. One person could not do it!. I have been told also that you would have to stand on the seats and use your legs muscles to get it to release (didn't want to stand on my seats:)

So if your hand brake is making a winding in and out noise for more then 1/2 a second i would look at getting some preventive maintenance done and replacing the Hand break pads.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll definitely keep the EPB serviced regularly. Agree driving off without releasing the PB can’t be good for it.

Came across this thread while searching info on EPB service mode for RR Sport 2012, I am replacing rear pads and discs and am now wondering if having a set of park brake pads may be worth while as it will be pulled apart. And is there a service mode?
