View Full Version : Puma onboard Air Compressor

Hi all, I’m looking at mounting my ARB Air Compressor permanently and tried squeezing it under the drivers seat. It fits if attached (prob rivited) to the front of the seat box and there is enough room to connect the air hose. Just wondering if the heat is a serious problem with all of the fuses in close proximity to the Compressor. If ok? By far the easiest path back to the battery box is to follow the larger cable that supplies power to the fuse panel in your pic.
From memory it goes across the back of the transmission tunnel. You'll just have to get your cable thru the grommets.

If your going straight to the battery, you could just pull power from the fuse rail in the seat well.

If I did mine in that location, as Dorian suggested, tap into the power bus on the fuse panel. You could either source a new fusible link like what is there (to look almost 100% factory), or put a ring terminal to tap off the bolt lug on the side of the block. Earth it as you see fit.

If you add another 50A fuse to the vacant sections pictured, you should be OK. The cable feed for this fuse block is something like 25mm2, so heaps of current capacity for an extra 50A for a few minutes.

Pic is of a 2012+} defender. IIRC, the 2008-2011 models has a bit more 'eclectic' fuse panel arrangement.

Thanks for the reply’s guys. Good point about pulling power from the power bus. I’ve got an aux battery setup but, as the engine should generally be running when using the Compressor anyway, there’s no need to get to the battery box. If you saw my wiring in the battery box Toxic.......making it look 100% factory is not gonna happen!!!

I put an older ARB unit along the front side of the drivers seat box, just enough room to keep hose and inflater with it, without an e-box conversion. I was able to rotate the reservoir to get easy hose connection too. I bolted (through the floor) instead of rivets so i could get some rubber under it to dampen out the vibration. Well sika'd & loctite'd for good measure.

I got power off the fuse box and use a pressure switch plus an external manual switch.

I'll admit it smells hot when it's been working hard, but never had thermal cut out or anything. I have thought about plumbing a QC to outside the seatbox to save opening it up, but figure i'd rather it was ventilated and has a forced visual inspection pre-post use.

Hi,
I have seen one Defender with the pump under the driver's seat and access was a drop down hinge door cut into the seat tower.
As the seats were bouncy aftermarket luxury types, the usual seat base removal access panel was not use able.

Thanks for all the replies, I got the job done today. I rivited the compressor to the front of the seat box and pulled power back from the aux battery (not confidant enough with electrics to integrate into the factory setup + still under warranty....just). As you can see my battery box is best left closed!
The one issueI have is that the power is always on to the compressor. There is a switch to kick it into action but a led is always on. I’ll keep an eye on the “standby” power drain and install a switch if needed.
