I have a pair of ARB lockers which i have taken out of a D2 I bought. The diff centers are out and I'm looking at getting some
4.11 gears installed which I bought off a member here, and fitted up by "360 Gear box and Diffs" in Bayswater. I went there today
to get a round about price for fitting them up.
I was told around $660 for each diff to have them fitted with new bearings and seals.
Does this sound about right for a job like this?
They also told me the housing might need to be shaved for the 4.11 gears.
I have never heard of that before for the D2. Would that be right?
Some feedback would be great.
Thanks
Chris

It doesn’t take long to set up a diff, so hourly rate and $80 worth of bearings...
Keep that in mind [emoji6]

A bit of a difference though when a new crown wheel and pinion are to be installed, especially as a one (or two) off. To do it right you need a set of old bearing cups to grind down to allow easy determination of the 'height setting' shim(s) for the pinion gear and depending on the type of diff the 'pre load' adjustment. A fair bit more work than 're setting' a diff with its original pinion/crown wheel. Is the LR owner supplying the 'unique' diff shim sets for the LR diffs or is the mechanic/technician expected to source these to measure and fit ? Are the diffs supplied dis assembled, cleaned and ready to go or is this also to be done ?
I reckon the $660 quoted is a fair price for a 'here are my old diffs with new crown wheel/pinions' supplied.
On a different tack, there are better options than ARB air lockers out there. Why go to this much trouble/time/effort/expense to end up with a second rate result ? IMO ARB air lockers aren't really very good, better than open diffs but not a patch on LSD's or Torsion/ATB in a light vehicle.
