Some Japanese soldier was ordered to not surrender and posted to a small island during World War II. He wasn't informed of the end of the war and continued to hide and fight a guerilla war until 1972.. unbelievable. He refused to surrender until the guy who used to be his commanding officer in the 1940's visited the island to order him to surrender.

I saw that soldier on Gilligan's Island. He told Mr Howell that he wasn't going to torture him, because he was already being tortured enough by Mrs Howell!
