The Defender was not named until 1989. By that time the vehicle introduced in 1948 and its derivatives had been in production for over forty years - and was simply called a "Land Rover". This name was appropriated as a name for the parent company, with the parent company (Leyland) having become a dirty word.

This meant that a new name was needed for the Landrover, and "Defender" was selected, for reasons that have never been clear. (Plenty of "explanations", noe of which make a lot of sense.)

But calling a 1948 Land Rover a Defender makes no more sense than calling it a Series 1. Series 1 was only introduced as a term after the Series 2 was introduced. They were always just "Land Rovers".

Bob, weren't all the various series long term prototypes of the Defender? [wink11]

We all know that the pre production land rovers ceased once they unveiled the pinnacle of LR- The 2012 Defender 90, specifically those in Orkney Grey.

Interesting story - thanks for sharing it - and great to see such an important pre-production Land Rover being saved and restored.

Sorry I am. Nonsense it is. I should have known better than disrespect the land rover elders. They answer to a higher power, and respect them we must.

Confusing Series vs Defender Landies, lucky you weren't excommunicated for such sacrilege!

Yeah, scary stuff. Then again, I don't know the difference between the different dinosaurs, either. You know what they say, one mans Australovenator

Wintonensis is another's Timinus Hermani. The one I wouldn't like to run up against is Rhoetonsaurus Brownei, which is rumoured to be the centre steer of the dinosaur world. One brown eye to steer clear of.
