Hi all
What is the story with the hand brake drum on early DII's
I beleive that at some stage they were redesigned to make them more robust.
Is that correct and if so why. I have a 99 TD5 and no matter how tightly adjusted I keep the handbrake drum it rattles alot
It gives me the sh....ts

The handbrake should not be adjusted tight. If they're tight, they grab & shudder while slowing down.
I'm wondering if this is your rattle.
Does everything look OK inside ?

Have not opened it up to see, but you are right about the grab and shudder.
The rattle coincides with the vibration I have @2200 RPM, but still should not be there
I guess to open it up, I have to take the rear drive shaft off??
But what was it that caused Landrover to construct a heavier handbrake assembly

Yes, the rear shaft has to come off to remove the drum.
I'm not sure if it's going to be related to your vibration at 2200rpm.
As I said, a tight handbrake normally shudders while slowing down - at around 30kph to a near stop say at traffic lights.
I don't know about LR making a stronger handbrake during the DII life. There was a Service Action involving the handbrake but it was for a handbrake lever travel issue.
Check the double uni in the front shaft just to make sure this is OK. These don't have a grease nipple fitted & flog out causing all sorts of noises.
