View Full Version : Fuel guage/fuel consumption

I've just bought a 1993 RRC, 3.9V8, ZF auto.
I'm getting about 22l/100km out of it at the moment. Not real good, but better than when it had no vacuum advance and a 'stuck open' thermostat.
I've put a new 82deg thermostat in and replaced the dissy with a bosch scorcher which gives out a very healthy spark. Timing is about 5deg.
I think its still running rich. What to change next, the temp sensor?
Also, the fuel guage doesn't seem to correlate too well with the actual consumption. Its all over the place.
Also, this model has the filler right at the top of the guard and doesn't seem to want to fill the tank very easily. Is this normal for this model.

sounds about par with my 93 ve8 disco! my 3.5 auto would get slightly better figures at 20l/100k's. vacume advance wont make that much differance, trust me mine still dosent have one, i reckon its better without?
and yes my gague is hard to read when moving.
i fixed this problem! i bought a td5 90!
cheers phil

I've been getting ave 17l/100 from my supercharged 3.9L but it had a few problems big miss under load and i thought it had a rev limiter set at 4000.
Got it on the dyno at CNJ Motorsport yesterday.
There diagnosis was fuel pump (origional) inadequate flow, car was leaning out up to 17:1 fuel ratio under load but on average running rich.
Ignition leads to Unichip were reversed.. causing miss and cutout at 4000.
They installed highflow pump and rewired the Unichip then retuned the base map on the dyno.
result revs fine now, no miss and putting out 102Kw at the wheels (up from 70Kw).....and boy can I feel the difference!!!. they say overall fuel economy should improve....I will find out over next few days .
CNJ are accredited agents for Unichip and have a 4x4 dyo. Chip and supercharger were bought from and installed by Graham Cooper in Sydney

HI ytt105,
My 3.9 was getting 26lt/100 11mpg, so i went back to the basics, changed oil, cleaned air filter, changed plugs, checked timing, checked and reset pot and throtle butterfly, reset fuel settings, which lowered it to around 24lt/100.
Then got my hands on a can of electrical terminal cleaner and sprayed every connection on the efi harness of thing eg, ecu, injectors, temp sender (not guage sender) fuel sender, and any other that was on the efi side of things. this lowed the fuel rate to around 18/19lt/100 13-14mpg, for around $5 good investment.
Fuel guage can be a fault with the voltage reg in the dash, has any of the other guages played up??
I know mine is not an 93 but the motor is and im running a zf so not much difference
