New Rear Shocks Required

Hey guys,

My rear shocks are slowly fading so I'm on the hunt for some new ones. I currently have a Puma 110, with Dobinson's 40mm lift springs and long travel shocks. (Upgraded 350kg). The springs are fine (I think!)

I have recently added an 85L fridge to the back, added a rear fender water tank (36L) and will be adding a gullwing shelving system very soon, so I have been adding a bit of weight. I'm keen to make sure I put the right shocks on, and upgrade if required.

Spending a little time reading online (although more to do) Koni, Bilstein & Old Man Emu seem to be the higher rated options. Although Dobinson have good reviews too.

I dont know a great deal about suspension but I do know depending on what vehicle you have depends on which shocks are better suited.....so looking for some advise from fellow Defender owners on your experience.

i recently had a bad experience with ome shocks. tore one apart on the csr, ripped the eye out of the top of a rear shock. a well known outback mechanic told me that he sees more ome failures than any other make.
i now have original lr shocks. i think many previously respectable brands have been cheepend in recent years.

The only OME shocks I tried ended up leaking, but that was some time ago.
Since then I’ve had Koni for many years without any problem. They are adjustable too.

I never had OME, but previously had Bilsteins and Procomp. Now I ride on Koni Raid 90's. They are big shock and not cheap (about $500 - 600 per shock), but are rebuildable. I wish I had bought them in the first instance and not wasted money on other brands.

They are fitted to a 130 that weighs in at 3 tons in normal daily driving mode. Loaded with gear or daily driving mode, the Koni's are a far superior shock.

Thanks guys.....having read your replies and searching the Koni brand on other posts here it seems like they are a very good option (albeit expensive). Once the new water pump is on and the AC hose is replaced this is next on the list.

i fitted plus 50mm Dobinson springs 300 kg extra carrying load on the rear and 200kg on the front and fitted 41mm foam cell Irom man shockies all round to my 110 (which Superior engineering recommended) been on for over a year now and spends more time on the dirt than the bitumin. Very happy with the results
