View Full Version : Bullitt - 50year anniversary

To mark the 50th anniversary of Bullitt Ford has released a 2018 tribute Bullitt Mustang.
At the Detroit Motor show release they had the original 68 stang from the movie on stage with the new one along with Molly Mcqueen (Grandaughter of Steve) and the owner of the 68 stand - they say is worth $3million. They do not think the 2018 Bullit will be coming to Australia.
The 68 from the movie was sold to a family man - as he was the only one who replied to newspaper add and showed up with the money in 1974. It was used as a daily driver for a number of years - and then parked in a garage to await restoration. A couple of years ago the owners got in contact with Ford saying they had the car.
I had to go to you tube and watch the chase scene again (it is in 2 parts).
When compared to todays car chases it was a very simple chase with only a couple of cars being destroyed in it. I was also surprised at how calm the drivers were during the chase and had a small chuckle when the bad guy rolled down the rear window to shoot out of at Steve McQueen instead of shooting it out.

They sold some 40th anniversary ones ten years ago.

That remains one of the best car chases ever filmed (as opposed to car chases created with CGI).
It is great for film study because it illustrates so many things about the way films are made including camera work, editing, sound, techniques used to focus attention, the effect of different focal lengths and many more.

Absolute TOP movie, as were most of McQueen's. I see that they've found the second of the two Mustangs used in the movie,....bought for $5K,.....after resto will be worth at least $1m......identified by chassis numbers etc.

- and the green VW that was so quick that they had to pass it four times. :)
However, that VW and the hubcaps were useful to make a point about how action sequences were filmed.

Except, to my eyes it was blue. Common, apparently.

Yes. Second, in my book, is the first French Connection film. After that it is a fair way back to third. Mine for that is the first Bourne movie with the Mini. Darn, Mini.... The original Italian Job should really be third..., or second.

I didn't mind the car chase from the blues brothers movie.

I always found Bullitt (other than the chase) to be a terribly boring film. I much prefer the original Vanishing Point.

What I realty loved about Bullit was that Steve McQueen was a bona fide racer and did his own driving.
It looks real.
I hated the car chases of the eighties and beyond where the cars had buckets of rear brake bias and massive rear anti-roll bars to get the arse out and sliding at extreme angles.

Now you are obviously a man that knows his "car" films.
Yes, the original "Vanishing Point" with Barry Newman (Petrocelli) is an absolute classic, I have the DVD, but I'm a bit of a McQueen freak, so Bullitt rates pretty highly with me too, as does what I call the best motor racing movie of all time,.."Le Mans"....I did say I was a McQueen freak!
We (all of us car nuts!) all went to see Vanishing Point when it was first released, it was a serious topic of our conversation,...still is!!

I am but I tend to have to watch them on my own as the missus isn't the least bit interested. I rate Two Lane Blacktop and American Grafitti very highly as well and enjoy the more 'for laughs' ones like Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit. Blues Brothers is far better for the incredible musical cameos (like Aretha Franklin as the cafe owner) than the car chase.

I am generally more impressed by car chases that use camera techniques, editing and such things to get a spectacular effect rather than just writing off a lot of cars or using a lot of CGI. After all, with CGI, anything is possible.
I believe that "Bullitt" only destroyed one Mustang.

There's a YouTube series called Roadkill with two guys who used to work on Hot Rod Magazines. They do a lot of builds (mostly quite sketchy) and one of the two built himself a similar car. It's a great fun series to watch.
