I was speaking to a very good Land Rover defender mechanic some time ago. And they fair got up me after asking about getting my Puma defender serviced...
They were saying only a 2.4 is actually a Puma and the 2.2 isn't?
i know they're both called a Puma by everyone but is there a reason they would have said the 2.4 is only a Puma?
I'm only trying to get some of the right info, might have to ring the mechanic again tomorrow...

Your mechanic is incorrect [emoji6]

Ford 2.0 L, 2.2 L, and 2.4 L engines are called ZSD. They are produced at the company's Dagenham plant in east London.

See here: Ford Duratorq engine - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratorq_engine)

Having said that; you don’t hear people running around calling their TD5 a Storm [emoji41]

I believe from 2007 on,when the model changed, they were all 'Puma'

Engines, and a few other things changed over the model run,but they were still a Puma.

Or Tdi's Gemini's.....

Which is why I'm a dick and only call later Deefer's Tdci's.

Ford derived engine. The current 2.2 and (five cyl) 3.2 are indeed named "Puma". The 2.4 from the same family was/is also referred to by that name. I recall when we made the call to switch from the 2.4 to 2.2 on Ranger, long before it saw production... actually before we had built representative prototypes... The 2.4 and 2.2 are highly related but obviously not exactly identical. The 2.2 has quite a few upgrades/changes/development over the older 2.4. Then there are the 'generations' within that. I think the MY18 Puma family goes from Gen3 to Gen3.5, at least where a legacy engine isn't required or retained. I'm not familiar with the "Cougar" name in this context so can't comment on that if it is a codename.
Just like the later/current V6 and V8 diesels are "Lion" (again linked to Ford, but slightly differently). The engine family gets a name, then there are different variants within that family, and generational upgrades also.
Most engine families have names, from any manufacturer. 'Astron' is one old example from Mitsubishi...

Which is why Mike mentioned 'Storm' for the TD5, and the 200/300Tdi's were 'Gemini'.

An old mate was an engineer with JRA in the eighties and later a consulting engineer in the nineties and before and just after the TD5 was released he always referred to it as the 5 cylinder 'Storm'.

Legit?

No no no.....Both 2.4 and 2.2 are code named puma

That said, I still think it's a good idea to call 2.2 cougar as it's smaller and more refined.....

Our 2010 110 has a sticker on the chassis which says 'Puma"..... so is it the engine, chassis or just a Ford name which covers the whole thing? I neither know nor are really as it's a good vehicle generally.

I was just out for a fang in my storm and noticed I was being chased by a cougar or puma. Couldn't tell in my rear vision mirror.
