I have just received a speeding fine from nsw for exceeding by more than 10kmh,for the 23 dec. Rego number is not familiar and I was firmly rooted in Tassie ( couple of days from being in hospital with a major infection), it has my name and address in Tassie, how does this happen and what am I chasing (stolen identy or simular)
cheers

I'd post it back with a note "Not one detail is correct."
Sign it "Gerald".

Mild compared to what I felt like doing BUT
if my identity has been stolen I would at like to be proactive and not reactive

I was reading on facebook last night about a fellow who sold his car, didn't transfer or cancel the registration.
Now from the mounting speed camera fines, it looks as if he is going to lose his licence.
His solution, ask for advice on facebook.

I often receive bills addressed to unknown persons at my address. Sometimes I call and it usually turns out to be a fault in their database. Usually I just post back "return to sender". If it's debt collectors, I throw it in the bin. They often send out letters to all and sundry in the hope they get a hit.

Because it is your name and address, yep, treat it more seriously. I have worked with people who have received incorrect speeding fines in the mail. It's usually because the automation has got it wrong. They can't recognise a digit so it gets sent to the owner of the nearest rego number. Things like that. Confronting the issuing office usually solves the problem. They withdraw the infringement and send it to the next poor bastard on the list.

Was it a 'camera fine' or one issued by a copper? If it is a camera fine, then it is just a case of mis-read licence plate(do the car details match yours), or someone has doctored a plate to read the same as yours, probably a coincidence. If it is a police issued fine, then someone has used your details, and possibly got a copy of your licence and looks like you.....as the copper would have had to have sighted some ID, preferably a licence, when issuing the fine.

The last time I was in Nsw was 2008, didn't stop on the way from melb toi 1770. The rego number has all the markings of a nsw rego number, I have only ever had Tassie regoed vehicles apart from a disco 2 and a caravan with wa rego. How did my name get attached to a nsw rego

Until you mentioned that it was a letter, I thought it might have been the same as the email notification of a fine that I have had a couple of times.

The first time it happened, I was immediately suspicious because it claimed I was speeding in NSW at a time when I was in Tasmania.

A search confirmed that it was a scam.

blazeAfter reading that the rego number isn't yours...rules out mis-read plate. Do you have any friends or family in NSW who know your name and address...and who might have given false details when caught? Although, it would have had to have been a sloppy copper for that to happen, as they would need ID to back it up, especially considering you are interstate.

Update
long time on phone, make that a bloody long time
I searched the rego number in different states and found the plates belong to a lancer I deregistered on 30 dec 2015 in WA. The plates are now on a mirage in NSW, my lancer was silver, mirage is white. It seems the plates have been passed on by a wrecker (car was stolen and wrote off the day it was sold), After talking to WA transport my name will always be associated with them plates even though they are delicenced. Half the bloody mess is sorted out, not so worried about identity theft now but still need to go down the police route

Irrespective of the results of working with your local police - you need to take Option 2 or maybe Option 4 on the back of your infringement notice. If you do not get the Ok to get off the hook by NSW this will follow you for ages and keep coming back.

I received a NSW fine a few years ago, but it had a picture of a Ford Falcon- same plates numbers as mine. I sent a picture back of the Land Rover, showing plates ( & Labrador with head out of the rear window) & a note saying " does this look like a Ford Falcon??"
I assumed that there were plates with same numbers in other states, either way, I never heard anymore from them.

Never pay a camera fine without seeing a copy of the photograph, unless you are 100% sure you were at the location and speeding.

I have lots of these photos with some really nice cars I've owned over the years,

Used to cost $7.80 and Sgt Glen Ritchie was patient enough to sit by the side of the road and take every one.

Now they're free to download! Kinda.

Did you mean Sgt. Get Ritcher ;)

I see with Victorian Traffic Camera fines you can now login with a fine "obligation number" and view the photograph on line.

Cheers, Mick.

I found out some years later from a retired deputy commissioner that any infringement had to be 'signed' by an officer and said Glen Ritchie was the man. He didn't actually take the photos.

Used to be based in Werribee I believe.
