While driving home from town yesterday, the County started making a rather loud rattle. It seemed to be coming from the LH rear of the engine. I decided that it was probably the mounting bracket for the aircleaner had broken - again.

As we were nearly home, I drove gently for the rest of the trip. This morning I moved it into the workshop, and put the bonnet up vertically. Going round to the left of the vehicle I was ready to wiggle the aircleaner, when the issue became obvious. The end cover of the aircleaner had come off. Remarkably, it was still there, jammed between the engine and the bulkhead. Examination revealed that the reason it had come off was that the thread on the nut was stripped.

With some difficulty, I removed the nut from the cover (it is captive), turned it out, turned a brass bush that was a press fit into the bored out wing nut, and then the threaded the bush.

Making the refurbished nut captive took a bit of ingenuity, but I managed it.

Other owners of Isuzu engined Countys or Perenties might want to check the condition of the tthread on this nut. It gets moved every service, and is only made of zinc alloy.
