Aircond thermo and fan switch 95 130

anyone know how the thermo switch part works on the combined fan and thermo switch on a 95 defender?

my fan switch works but the thermo part just spins around...

I'm thinking of fitting a thermo fan up front to help my AC, but your car already has a fan? and a switch ?

my car has none of this magic.[biggrin].

I'm no expert, but see if you can get it apart. My switch has 3 speeds, and the outer cold control is step-less, like a rheostat, so perhaps the knob has come adrift from the shaft.

spent a few minutes on it today in between jobs

the fan switch appears fine and works correctly

the temp adjust outer switch is another story :p

outer knob just spins as it has lost the little pin that was in it, but i can adjust the outer by hand, and sadly it doesnt make the compressor clutch kick in

so more investergating is needed it appears...


which relay in the battery box area controls the clutch, anyone know ?

You may have a crook “thermo amp”
But do your due diligence continuity/ connection/fuse/switch checks first.

I’d start with bridging the PX switch typically found on the receiver drier and see if you get some action.
Most AC apparent electrical issues typically start here due to low gas and the system working/isolating as designed.

Ps if it comes to “thermoamp” diagnosis, PM me for a unit.
They are hard to get.

After re-soldering contacts on the thermoamp many times, I did away with it and fitted a DC temp controller. It took quite a lot of chasing and identifying wires etc but well worth it.

By being able to set the cut in and out temperature it allows the AC to run a lot cooler.

I got the controller from Ebay and from memory was about $15 - 20.

I have also fitted an isolation switch that cuts power to the compressor, so that on long hills where the engine is starting to get warm I can turn off the compressor but still have everything else running, still getting cool air until the top of the hill.

The fan speed switch is still used this just replaces the temperature controller ring.
