View Full Version : Help - How to unlock gear shift

Just had some recent work done on my car (body off). Unfortunately the gear shift doesn't line up with the gearbox. The shifter is in park but the electronic indicator shows R. The engine is off. I'm now stuck with 3 kids and other half away from home. How do I unlock the gear shift? Or how do I move the linkage to be in park?
Any help would be appreciated.

Remove the cup-holders. Look for a white plastic tab on the right rear of the gear-lever mechanism. IIRC it needs to be lifted (but perhaps pressed) to allow the lever to be pulled back.

Look in the FAQ at the top of the page, it tells you in posts 15 - 20 depending on which lever you have or the dial.

Thanks Graeme,
I'll give that a go. Been watching your posts over the years and love your work. Thanks again.

Ok, I've unlocked the shifter but still won't go into P on the box. It moves when shift it but the best I can get is R. Any more idea? Pleeeeease

Cheers Ran, currently on my phone frantically searching. If I had the laptop or tablet, I'd be set. [emoji3]

Yes it does Ean, but the shifting is way out of wack. Thanks for the advise, you've got me out of a pickle. I should be able too get home and to the workshop on Monday. This is when you know this forum is awesome.

As long as it gets you and the family home , the rest can be sorted out.
Cant help with why its out of whack but hopefully its an easy fix.

Seems like the shift linkage on the side of the box was installed incorrectly

For those who would like to know. The gear selector on the gearbox is on the right side by the gearbox rear cross member and near the exhaust cross over. 13mm spanner and Bobs your uncle.https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2018/01/1006.jpg
You can see the gearbox pan and the exhaust on the other side.

So select park and adjust selector to suit?

Pretty much. Mine was a whole gear out.

Flotty, who did the body-off, and for what repair?

I'm not going to say who did the body off, all I can say is, I was a little frustrated by the experience. The body was off to fix two warped exhaust manifolds (more frustration and more to pay off the home loan).
