Looking for someone that might know a few things about transfering the ownership of my caravan from here in Vic to someone in Qld.

Basically in Vic all someone needs is a reciept from the PO with all the vans details, licence numbers and addresses of both parties and signature of the PO. Van has current rego which the transport company requires -all good there.

I've got the money and I have supplied said document to the new owner. He is organising transport (which brings up another question in a minute) but is wondering what papers he'll need when he goes to register it in Qld - will he need anything else signed by me for this or just the required bits like gas certificate, etc that Qld rego requires?

On the transport front - he's obviously wanting to insure it for the trip up there - while he has paperwork to show he is the owner, it isn't registered in his name - will this be an issue for the insurance do you think - bit of a catch 22 if it is.

We are both a bit in the dark, but just trying to help him here - he's been an absolute Gentleman to deal with all the way so happy end a bit of extra time trying to ensure it gets to him safely, legally and insured.

Cheers - Gav.

Hi Gav

When I bought the Jag from Vic a few years ago. The seller provided me a receipt with the car details, vin no, his name, mine, price and signature. The car was sold un registered.

The receipt was all I needed to present at the DOT here to get the car registered (as well as going over the pits). Basically they needed to check from the vin that it wasn't stolen or written off and from the price paid calculate the stamp duty.

I’d also suggest the purchaser double check with the Qld transport Dept or what ever they are called.

cheers

Steve

Gday Gav,

He should be able to get a cover note for the van, I have done it many years ago with no issues, but then again we are talking about insurance companies.

Cant help with the other bit as every state is different , in the NT you just need either the old rego papers and a letter from the owner stating details , price etc , or the latter if no rego papers available. I sold a box trailer recently that I had bought in WA and sold it unregistered years later , but I had the old rego papers and they were happy with that.

Good luck - Cheers Ean
