View Full Version : ARB locker RD56 Disco 1 update and other disco one stuff

Hi all,
I am just wanting to confirm that the RD56 does indeed fit the rear (front too I guess) of all Disco 1 update models (post 4/93 24 spline according to ARB catalogue).
There are not any weird model configurations that are an exception to this?
Reason being is that even though I don't own a Disco yet (still attempting to sell my Rodeo) I have a $500 ARB voucher that expires 31 March 06. I won this from 4wdTV a while ago https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
So given its expiry date I thought I will most likely need to spend it before I get the Disco.
Also any prices unfitted that anyone has paid would be good. ARB retail is $1195 (Feb 2005 catalogue).
I already have the ARB compressor in the toolbox with the pressure switch. Would need the compressor and locker switches though. Could wire it myself and maybe fit it too if I get keen.
Thanks all.

My catalogue says RD56 front and rear for 4/93 on and RD03 for 3/93 and prior for D1.
RD57 is for D2 11/02 on (RD56 before that) for rear only and RD56 for front still.
Also RD57 for all Defenders with Rover type with traction control 02 onwards.
So RD57 must be for 02+ traction control models. Didn't all D2s have traction control from the beginning?
So the traction controlled 99-01 models still can use the RD56?

Mate,
Just buy the locker and it will be fitted,
Yes the RD56 fits all from 94 to 2001, series one and two,
as for pm, there is no way that the lockers were going to stay in the car when i sold it https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ , they would be going straight into the series two. However Heidi has spoken  and the series two has become a pipe dream  . They should be about 20years old when i will be aloud one, and then i will want the hover vehicle  .

Is that an offer of help https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
At least if I buy the RD56 I know I am not locked into getting a D1 even though I am 99.99999% sure I will be (as opposed to a D2).

We can all dream can't we? I dream that one day someone might actually buy my ute and I can then actually drive most of the tracks on our trips with the Disco 8) I have big plans for the fit out of the Disco so I am itching to buy one.
I'm awaiting the delivery of my RAVE CD that I bought off this site (hopefully tomorrow) so I can start reading up on stuff. Some people might think I'm mad for buying the manual and the locker before the actual car

Well I called around and the best price I could get was $1145. However I have discovered I can only use my voucher at ARB head office at Hendra (or in any other state). When I called them all they would do was full retail at $1195. Even when I asked for a cash price :?
However he did say he had 5 on the shelf and I could do a group buy if I wanted to. Maybe if we bought all 5 he could do them for $1190 each

Don't know if one more would bring it down to the magic $1190 (maybe $1194.50). Especially since your committed already.
The catalogue quotes $1505 for a fitted locker plus $413 for a fitted RDCKA compressor. That's $1918 all up.
Are you getting the small 'locker only' compressor? Otherwise they have already given you a discount on something. Unless you have a compressor already.
Although if you want to ask if they will give you a discount when you drop your car in I will come over and buy it on the spot.

Guess who bought an air locker today https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
There certainly is a lot of bits and pieces to play with in the box. Although most importantly it comes with a sticker so everyone knows I have the locker. This is the most important part. Just ask any ricer https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
It even comes with two switch covers. One for the front locker and one for the rear although only one switch. Maybe I could glue the front switch cover to the dash and pretend 8)
So now I have the AULRO username, RAVE CD and the rear locker.........hmmmmmmmmm what am I forgeting?.........................oh yeah I still haven't bought the Disco yet :!: One step at a time.

Cool. Tyre pressure goes down, tyre pressure goes up, tyre pressure goes down, tyre pressure goes up https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Although I already have the tool box compressor with the pressure switch I need to replace my tank with the one you would have got to accomodate the solenoids. Plus I need to buy the wiring loom and the compressor switch.
Tank is $12 but don't know costs on the rest.

So what year Disco are you after??
Utemad
10th March 2006, 05:00 PM
What I'm after is a 1994-1998 so it is the updated model. V8 auto. In the base model so I don't have to contend with ABS or air bags. Prefer white but any non metallic colour would do.
Although DiscoDan insists I need to take a look at the V8 manual so I'll take one for a drive before I buy.

V8 nice, I cant get that approved by the missus https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Are you looking now ?
Utemad
10th March 2006, 05:19 PM
I am keeping an eye on prices and such but not really looking for one to buy just yet. I have to get rid of my Rodeo first. Hopefully that won't take too much longer.
I don't need Missus approval though 8) She has her Corolla and I have my Rodeo. She hates driving my car and I hate driving hers.
Plus even after I modify my Disco it will still cost less than her 2004 Corolla https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

And the most important point after modification you will be able to use the Corolla as a drip mat when you park on it in the garage.
Utemad
11th March 2006, 04:21 PM
I could do that. Although I would put a drip tray on her roof first. I'm not all bad https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
After going through the parts in the box and reading though the fitting instructions I will welcome your help with fitting the locker with open arms 8)
I'm sure it will make more sense when I can see what they are talking about after we start fitting it but for the time being it is all very confusing.
Not sure where I will mount the compressor yet. Inside would be good for longevity but I am sure it would be loud and annoying. Either way I will run an air line to the rear bumper so when I pump up the tyres all I have to do is flick the compressor switch and plug the air line into the bumper.

Looked at a two door disco tdi 5sp with Jessie today, not bad and good price as well 6k or 7k with safety cert.
Plenty of extras from JD Rovers and ARB
and no air bags, abs so better for a starting point
If you need help with locker buy a car then we need to set the date, could do body lift whilst here, and larger tyres.
Boy have i got some junk laying around

Utemad

Well my plan for this car is to:
1. Fit locker & compressor (since I have it already)
2. Fit 2in suspension lift with new shocks etc
3. Dependent on tyres already fitted and these new light vehicle rules I'll either get an off road set of tyres and use the existing for hway or get a set of MTRs and run them 100%. Not sure on size yet.
4. I need a winch bar (have winch) and sidesteps, rear bar.
I'll do a body lift if I need it to fit the tyres. Otherwise I'll see if it is needed so I can raise the barwork higher or something like that.
All this will be done ASAP when I get the vehicle. I want it to be as per what I want straight away so I get max use of all the accessories. The bar work can probably wait so I can sort out or make some stuff but the rest is just bolt on.
Once all that is done I will reassess the need for a front locker and will get one if I feel it is necessary (or if I just want one https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ )
What is Jessie loooking at Discos for? As a base for his hybrid or as a dd so he can go nuts on his Rangie?
I saw that white man/v8 Disco at Stones Corner on th net yesterday but didn't feel like driving out there. Might do it this week. They want $9990 for it.

Its for the hybrid, just need a good base car to start with, the two door that we looked at had a good maintance record, it was serviced every 10k, motor had rebiuld and so on. general tlc was needed for the rest of the car, but over all as good ride with heeps of power, from down low right up through the revs.

That’s right NOZ
I have a spare set of blocks here as I am not comfortable lifting a car with airbags,
I bought three sets years ago, put one in my rangie, one in another and the third person pulled out so still have the spare set. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Just the thing for going up to 32” tyres on a series one Disco or Rangie
I think I put my 2 cents in to the post on body lifts. Only need the bolts, approx 24” of 1” flat, and a couple of pieces of angle. A day of time, and a slab of beer (everything goes better with beer)

I test drove this today. It drove okay other than the clutch stuck to the floor on two occaisions. Once when I was attempting to enter traffic on Logan Road and again as I pulled into the dealership. I thought it might have been a sticking clutch master cylinder?
However it was a bit of a rust bucket. It did have a cool sunroof though. It even worked! It had cruise control too but I thought all V8 update D1s did? Salesmen reckoned they didn't? This is a base model by the way. No roof rails.
They also had $13990 on the windscreen even though they had $9990 on the net.
The clutch was heavier than I'd like but it was the same as the last manual (diesel) Disco 1 I drove so maybe I am just a wussy little jap driving boy.
I think I'll stick with the auto. If my Wife ever had to drive it she wouldn't be able to push the clutch in at all https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Still not ready to buy just yet. I was just test driving that manual V8 while I had the opportunity.
Both of those look like good Discos. However neither were a base model. I'll try and get a base model for ease of modification and for less to go wrong.

or roof rails. When I saw it had a sunroof I opened it and stuck my arm out and felt around for the roof rails https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I looked before getting in but just wanted to make sure.
Just think. When all the fancy model people are having costly ABS overhauls. You'll be putting that money towards something you actually want 8)

Good price NOZ.
A mate of mine had one fitted and it costs over $2K because it had some suss bearings (ie- had water in the diff   ). Plus his was a 10 spline job not the 24 like your Disco :x
Still, if you waned the maxi axles, add $700 and you're only $200 better off. As I have always said, this is why I went the Maxi-drive route. I also got my maxi-drive for cash price of $1780 pre-fitting and it ended up at $2350 all fitted and ready for flogging
