Cruise control - can it be improved?

I'm sure we've all thought the cruise control is average. I was told by a tech that it's 4 k each side of the set speed and to have it in increments of 2! What were the engineers thinking?

Any thoughts? Can it be changed......for the better?

Mine tries to hold around 2km either side but it doesn’t floor it to maintain set speed. I generally find it’s not too bad.

I had an instance last weekend when I set it and it just kept accelerating to well above the figure I'd set it at. I've heard of this happening to others as well. I don't use it often especially on the so called freeways in Perth as you have to keep disengaging it when idiots overtake then pull in front and then take their foot off the throttle. :(

It can be quite aggressive sometimes and other times not enough. It’ll floor it to get up to speed from slow, but pulling my trailer it won’t try and maintain it on a hill to much of an extent. So yes, it’s a bit average.

Pulling a trailer use sports mode to make it more responsive when kicking back.

I've found my D4's to be one of the best I've used. It doesn't thrash itself just to get up to speed, or keep hunting for the target speed a la Toyota's rather agricultural system.
The 2km increment is slightly annoying though. Why it can't just hold the selected speed rather than rounding it up to the even number is a question for the engineers.

I have had a few different cars with cruise and I find mine no better or worse than any others. As far as the question with respect to what you can do to make it better, I dont believe there is anything - except consider when you switch it on - switch on when straight and level at a steady speed. Switching it on when going up hill when the engine is working or going down hill when coasting means your straight and level speed will off a bit.

From your original post are you commenting that the set speed differs from your road speed? If you are then you can fiddle with the set speed display with a code reader like a GAP tool. Don't bother trying to correct your speedo reading though if your going down that path....you can't.

That’s a later D4 thing. Earlier D4s will grab whatever odd or even number you set at.

Anything 80 or over I set +8km/h higher, then I’m only just nudging the tolerance.

My 2010 D4 3.0L will only lock to an even digit.
