Hi everyone,
I’m in planning mode again. This time it’s for some high country caravanning. I’d like to spend a few days camped in snow in a caravan with my kids.

Problem is; I’m finding it difficult to find any reliable info on where I can cheaply (free is best) camp in the high country with a van, in the snow.

Can anyone please advise where I could go?

Looking forward to your responses.
Cheers,
Adam

You could start here. Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council - ARCC Victoria - The Alpine Resorts (http://www.arcc.vic.gov.au/the-alpine-resorts)

Used to be the Alpine resorts Commission. They set the rules, so maybe start there. I know they were the people we had to obey when I was driving coaches up there.

From memory, about the only place a van is likely to be allowed would be Lake Mountain. Maybe Baw Baw. If it's a good season, Donna Buang would have 'sightseeing' snow. It isn't controlled, or it wasn't back then. Dunno about camping up there though.

Honestly crazy taking a van any where in the snow sorry to say[bighmmm]
Middle of winter near enough to Licola gets you very close to the snow but not in it a
.
I know a spot where you may free camp and only be 20 minutes to the snow [thumbsupbig]
Im not about to make the exact location public due to the potential flogging some precious people might make of it but if your keen pm me and i will disclose in private [wink11]

Up above Licola at Howitt plains will see you in the snow at times, but you'll need to be prepared for an extended stay as when it comes down you can get stuck up there for days. I've camped up there when it's happened. The Ranger came and told us what was coming - we were well prepared and had plenty of food so were happy to stick it out - we were in a tent that week, a bit brisk but beautiful to wake up to.
