View Full Version : D1 what Gauges do you use?

I have a 1998 D1 300tdi.
I was wondering what others with similar run in terms of Gauges, I'm looking mostly at digital readouts.
OBDII seems like the most promising option at this stage, but would like to hear of others experiences.
Cheers, Brad

In my case I have fitted into a dash binnacle -
a) VDO temperature gauge,
b) VDO boost gauge,
c) low coolant alarm, and
d) Madman EMS-2 digital setup (currently set for EGT temps, oil pressure & battery voltage)

Yeah doubt you have much luck doing something modern through obd2.
I made my own dash pod custom fit to gauges i wanted.

Does a 300TDI even have OBDII?

My understanding was that they did post 1996.

My understanding was that they did post 1996.
They have the OBD2 port as every market got the same body loom. Only some markets with the ECU controlled 300TDi got any function to it, not Australia. The engine loom including any ECU and relays plugs in at two large multi plugs just behind the firewall, and far less wires connect from the non-ECU diesels.

Mine is a 1997 has no obd2 port has cutout in panel under dash no port.

TM4 - head and auto trans temp
EGT
Low coolant alarm
Boost gauge on the cards if I start playing with turbo or boost

Mines a 4/99 build. Has the port, does nuth'n!
My preference for gauge(s) is the 1Gauge (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/communications-car-audio-and-electronics/238987-1gauge-some-questions.html?238987=#post2566224).
Seems like a steep price(~$500), but considering the number of gauges you get, it's actually quite cheep!
Easy to fit, just need adapters for the sensors you fit(as you would for any other gauge).
ps. if you follow my link and view the pics, never mind the quality of the cutout for the LCD screen. It was already hacked badly due to a previous owner fitting a compass there (that I removed).
I basically watch EGT and coolant temp. Keep an eye on the oil temp and pressure a bit too when the coolant is sitting high. They all seem to be directly related to each other.

Hello eddo. Can you tell me where you mounted the TM 4 auto trans sensor? Cheers

Hi
There is a big hex nut on the auto trans oil line where the factory temperature (overheat) sensor is just behind the bottom of radiator on the PS. I was a bit lazy and just attached the thermo-couple to the Hex nut with epoxy. I have been meaning to improve that connection as it is probably not very responsive due to the possibly poor thermal characteristics of the epoxy. But I have got used to what is 'normal' and it does go up and down quite quickly in changing conditions so I think it is ok for purpose. I have the TM4 alarm set at 100 and it has never gone off since I had a bigger oil cooler fitted when the trans was replaced with a reco unit about 70000km ago.

Thanks, eddo. Maybe it can be clamped on to either the pipe or the flat of the nut with a good hose clamp. No sure if the flat part of the sensor could be shaped to fit the round pipe. I presume that there is a thermocouple inside the barrel part of the sensor, so careful bending of the flat part should be ok. My car is at the dealers just now. I asked them to mark which pipe is the "hot" side, but they claim they do not know. I suggested that the one where the sensor is would be a good place to look! Cheers

These look good but I have no actual experience with them.

On a V8 the fuel gauge, on a TDI the temp guage.

Well glad i have a water temp gauge today. I was driving home from work today 35 degrees i noticed by temp going up got up to 110 and i knew something was seriously wrong was almost at 115 when i shut it off (had to find aomewhere safe to stop 100kph zone very narrow road).
Anyway factory gauge was still on half. You would never know without aftermarket gauge.
Anyway turns out top radiator hose clamp had failed wasnt going up tight.
Anyway filled it up again left overflow cap off and drove it home didnt go above 90 whole way home

My list looks to go along the lines of:
EGT
Low coolant alarm
Head temp
Trans temp
Boost gauge
Water temp.
I do like the look of the 1gauge, I don’t overly like the cost [emoji23] well not the Initial outlay anyway

Yeah! that's the hard part, but by the time you've got all those other gauges to achieve the same result, the 1Gauge comes out on top in terms of cost.
My next plan with mine, is to setup the oil temp gauge to also monitor the trans temp, using the same sensor type, and a flip switch to choose between one or the other(on as needed basis)

What about water temp vs head temp? I've got a TM1 and I'm planning on putting the sensor under a bolt on the thermostat housing but will that be reading the water or head temp or is it much of a muchness? Or do I really need one for each temp if I want to be safe?

I don't think you need one for each.
If you have the bolt on head setup already, it'll basically show the same thing as water temp at the thermostat housing, but will react more slowly(due to heat soak) than a coolant temp sensor will.

My brothers D1 has EGT and boost.
my D2 as of today has EGT, boost, and trans temp. The water temp gauge was on back order but has been posted and I've already run power for it.
I took trans temp temp from the trans directly, there is a plug right next to the hot cooler line. It's M15x1.5 and I simply used an M14 to 1/8 npt adapter and put the sensor there. It responds quite quickly.
