Transfer gearbox from Discovery to Defender

Hi everyone,

Can I take the gearbox from a Discovery (SALLJGMF7KA) to a Defender (SALLDHMF7VA)? The VIN number 7 matches with each other, but I don't know if it means it's exactly the same model.

Yes but.
Discovery box is 1.2:1 and a Defender is 1.4:1 for high range.
Low Range remains the same.

Hi Kyra, I don't know the answer to your question but putting your question this way ................... "Can I use the LT77 manual gearbox from a 1993 Discovery 1 (200 Tdi) to replace the LT77 manual gearbox in a 1997 Defender 110 (300 Tdi) ?" might get a more informed result :)

Or if you mean the transfer case, what Strangy says :)

It's about the gearbox, someone gave me the option to use his Discovery gearbox since mine apparently is gone.

Strangy; what do you exactly mean with the 1.2:1 and 1.4:1?

He means the gearing is different which could affect cruising speeds.
I have heard of people fitting Disco gears in Defenders to get a higher and more relaxed cruising speed, but I can't provide any details. Mine already has six speeds so it's not an issue for me.

Well in your thread heading you did use the term "Transfer gearbox ......... " - I took that to mean you wanted to move a Discovery Transfer case (a gearbox in itself) to a Defender.

From what you have just indicated, what I think you meant was to transfer (move) a Disco gearbox to a Defender - what I am not sure about is if you mean the gearbox and transfer case as one unit or just the Disco gearbox.

I think what Strangy meant is that the Disco Transfer case is 1.2:1 and a Defender is 1.4:1 for high range and that Low Range is the same - I dont think the gear ratios in the actual gearboxes are different.

So can you clarify if you mean the combined gearbox/tfr case unit, the gearbox by itself or just the transfer case by itself.

My Defender starts, but as soon as we drive it makes a sound like a yet is taking off. Some friends have located the problem down to the gearbox itself, and one of them offered his gearbox from a Discovery to 'swap' over. I know enough to know it's not an easy job, but need to know first if it's possible anyways.

I thought the Defender gearbox has a shorter bell housing and a shorter input shaft than the Disco box (but not sure) - and if also changing the transfer case as well, then high range ratios are different as outlined above.

Good question, as the gear lever will not align with the transmission tunnel "hole" for it.
I would be interested to know.
