Removing fuel pump do td5

Hi guys, just got a replacement VDO fuel pump today. I’ve disconnected all the hoses and the plug but I’m damned if I can move it in either direction. I’ve sprayed some penetrating oil to see if it helps but it won’t budge.
Which way should it turn? Looking at the new pump it would appear to go anticlockwise but I’m really not sure.
I’m sure I’ll get some answers.

Are you pushing the pump down when turning it?

We used a very square edged cold chisel and constant tapping with a hammer on the retaining ring.

The tapping breaks the baked in welded crud that the retaining ring must have accumulated over the years.

We had a massive grippy doodad, like a pipe wrench, but at no point did it feel as tho it was releasing the retaining ring .. only bending the small tabs that were better off not being bent!

Is this a D2 or Defender?.
No experience with Defender(but assume it's similar or the same) .. but on my brother's D2, the pump retained it's collapsed state after the ring was finally freed.
It then SPRUNG! up on us as we were trying to remove it .. scared a bit of brown stuff out of us, when that happened, and we thought we broke it.

As already implied by johntins with his pushing down comment .. it is spring loaded, and when re fitted requires a considerable amount of pressure downwards to refit the retaining ring.

And definitely, definitely anti clockwise.

Lots of red dust and diesel had glued mine shut and as you do,hammer and bolster anti clockwise does the trick.

Also bear in mind there can be a very minor difference in the electrical connector. It looks the same & seems to slide together OK but actually doesn't click in place.
This happened when I replace my wife's '95 Disco pump & it took about a month to vibrate loose & left her stranded on the Monash on ramp, in peak hour.
No doubt my mechanical ability status took a wallop over that one...
From memory you need to file it down a bit.
