Hi All
Vehicle is a 1998 130 HCPU with 299,000kms
Sometimes when I roll back at traffic lights then move forward, I hear a twang like noise out of the back diff. It reminds of the noise I used to hear when I was learning to drive in an 1969 MGCGT which had splinned knock on hubs and my dad always said there was some play in the splines.
Anyway, some history - I had an ARB locker installed in the rear diff exactly 5 years ago. At the time the locker was installed, the rear axles were what I was lead to believe to be Bearmach "upgraded" axles. I was also using Bearmach heavy duty drive flanges. I was always worried about these axles so about a year later I purchased a set of maxi drive axles and drive flanges.
Now over time I have this noise. It is not there all the time, only in the scenario mentioned above - when the weight of the truck moves backward then forward.
I have removed and inspected the axles and the splines look fine with no signs of wear at either end.
When I jack up the car and rotate a wheel, I notice a lot of slack in the diff.
Could I have somehow warn the splines inside the locker or could it back lash in the diff or could it be crown wheel/pinion wear?
I just rang ARB who originally installed the locker and they told me to go to a diff place.
Can anyone recommend a diff place on the southside of Brisbane or will the likes of MR Automotive be about to advise?
Thank you
