View Full Version : Mud Tyres for D4 in 18"

It's been awhile since we've had feedback & discussion on mud tyres and things evolve so I thought a new thread worthwhile.
I have personal interest in this because I've got myself one of the first sets of the new Tuffant 18" steel wheels.
For an all-rounder I would not go past the KO2 or D697 but with KO2s already fitted to the Compomotive wheels I'm looking at MTs for the second set.
This will mainly be for use on day/weekend trips focused on technical/difficult/sloppy terrain and to try something different as well.
I'll be continuing with 265/60 for flexibility of spares but both tyres I'm considering also come in 285/60;
Achilles Desert Hawk and Monsta Mud Warrior
The Achilles have some fans in this forum but it's very hard to find any feedback on the Monsta Mud Warrior, although their AT has had some good feedback.
So anyone with the Achilles, Monsta or any other MT available in 265/60 with feedback to offer?
I've seen the first two sets of Tuffants fitted to vehicles yesterday; KO2s in 265/65 and the Achilles in 265/60:

Not a mud tyre but I like this photo.

Don't forget Hankook Dynapro M/T, I've found them great.
For sale here now I'm selling the D3.

So any feedback on the Monsta Tombie? As per OP I’m considering these and the Achilles.

Wondering what kind of mileage people are getting from their KO2s on 18s? Predominantly will be on road but require ability to drive into potentially wet paddocks daily.

Hiya Scott,
They’re a great tyre. I’ve been really impressed.
They are noisy though, and although I use them as a daily I’m not sure I’d do it for really long hauls (remember a run to town is 4 hours for me)..
Handle really well on Dirt, Sand, Rock and both wet and dry bitumen. Was surprised at the wet road capability, it’s very reassuring all things considered.

KO2s aren’t any better than most ATs in mud...

Tombie has a 2.7 - so smaller calipers from factory.

I'm running Kuhmo MT51 265/60R18 on my Compomotives. They call them an "aggressive AT" but have basically the same tread pattern as the Achilles Desert Hawk MT. I've done maybe 7,000km on them so far - best test was Vic High Country where they performed really well (except on ice). They are a tad noisy on road although I didn't really think too much of it until I put the road tyres back on and realised how much quieter it was!

I’m hoping to get my new Tuffants delivered next week, but not sure whether to go the 265/60 or 265/65 tyre size. Does the 65 rub or need any body alterations? Is the 60 good enough all rounder, I do a fair bit of beach driving, but seem to get by now on my 20” 50 profiles aired down.

It was interesting comparing the Achilles and the Monsta back to back. It was a very short test and the ground was super sandy and gravelling that easily dug holes. There was 2 sets of the Monstas, one at full pressure and one at reduced pressure, and the Achilles at full pressure.
I am not really sure there was huge difference in performance on those tracks, with all 3 performing similarly. The both had good grip, and both went up and down the same slopes.
I think its more a case of stay tuned for more testing on this limited outing

Anyone tried the general grabber mt in 275/65/18? Does it rub much?

It would rub, the 265/65 rubs slightly when new and is hard to get into the spare wheel well. wider and taller again I suspect would require deflation to get any chance of carrying it in the normal space

275/65/18 rubs significantly and requires mods. Details are on the GOE website and many posts here.
Following comment is from ~Rich~ who ran that size on his D3 (noting the D3 has less of a chassis protrusion so better clearance at the front):
"Yes I have had to modify the seam that is in the front of the rear wheel arch and also move the coolant lines to the rear A/C unit too."
