View Full Version : TD5, warped exhaust manifold

How many of us have had theTD5 blow its exhaust gasket  , how many have been the result of a warped manifold  .
If so has anyone had the manifold modified to prevent warping. 8O
Whats the go with these manifolds
Anyway I have bought ten new studs and the gaskets I need, so after I get the two broken studs out And have the manifold faced i will put it back together :? before I do any Landrover secrets I could do with knowing

I'm not sure if the manifold warps & breaks the studs or the studs break then the manifold warps.
We've had a few surface ground to get them flat again & then replaced the studs. It took a few machine shops before we could get one who'd do the work though. They're not easy to set up apparently.

had mine machined twice so far
just finished putting a new gasket on today https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
TD5 are known for doing them

TWICE ! mmmmm this could get boring very quickly, I hope this is a one off for me.
I bought the gear to fix this because the LR extended warranty mob advised they don't cover exhaust systems ,,,,,and they photo copied the "items not covered "to prove it :!:  .......I wish I had had another look at the policy before I bought the bits,,,, under engine componants covered, it lists exhaust manifold. 8) another gem of LR PR. 8O   *#@&!!!
With each day my old V8 is looking better and better. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
God I had a good run with it https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

i'm going to see a bloke i know thats into exhausts https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
fingers crossed he can come up with a solution https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
i'll let you know when i do

I'd be interested in that Ray, as i did mine just recently, broken stud and warped manifold.
Got the manifold machined by an engineering workshop in Barry Ave Penshurst, he says he's done a few TD5s, at $40 i can't complain.
And as luck would have it, i had a stud left over from my old Superbike that i blew up before the last Bathurst race in 88  , fitted perfect https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

You guys wouldn't have chipped diesels that cause higher EGTs by any chance???

I know Hiline & Redback are chipped but it happens with the standard diesels also.
We had a run of them last year but not one for a few months now.

No real surprise it warped if chipped, the hotter engines do it.
Mines gone 3 times, warped manifold every time too.
Extended warranty paid up each time.
Cheers

It depends how the claim is worded.
A tech here has told me that the studs break first, then the gasket blows, then the manifold warps.
If the claim was worded that way, then it's not an actual exhaust claim. It's an engine claim with the exhaust affected as consequential damage.

everytime mine has gone   it was a broken stud that caused it

Yep did mine recently. Three broken studs. I also found the previouos guy to do it had left half of the old gasket on there and just sloshed gesket goo all over it
At least my overheating problem seems to be sorted https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ And my fuel consumption has improved 8)

Thanks scouse https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ,,,,,,,,,,,,
But the manifold is a componant of the engine, as described within LR's own extended warranty booklet 8) , so it is correct what you say,,,, but only because the claims guys are generally knuckleheads at best or playing silly buggers at worst.
either way it results in a bad taste in my mouth every time someone asks how my Landrover is. and that means I bag the company(not the car) 8O at every discussion, which means the morons are advertising themselves out of work,,,,,,,,,,,eventually IMHO

I drilled the holes out bigger on the manifold this allows for a bit more expansion of the manifold,if you look at the holes you may see where
the manifold has been pushing against the stud which causes it to break.
On mine the holes at the ends had half a thread worn into them, drilling larger holes into the manifolds was a mod we use to do on caterpiller engines that kept breaking studs had no more drama's after that

Stevo,
That is a good tip you give to open up the holes, a few machine shops I phoned suggested the same. I have done this tonight.
I have spoken to an engineering mob in town today, I asked them to weld webs on the turbo side of the manifold. Basically triangulate from the turbo flange out to numbers 1 and 5.
I am also considering tapping the stud holes to take M10studs :?: :?: not sure yet.
I had reservations about them welding mild steel onto the cast manifold,(differant cooling rates in service etc etc) 8O ,,,, they assure me that it will be alright :? I suppose I will find out sooner or later, or if there are any metalurgist on here,, speak up.
AND
Me smells sumfin fishy,,,, :x not that I'm into bagging LR at all 8O ,, But there where three metal gaskets used under my manifold 8O three bloody crush gaskets  what are these LR Wallys thinking.....  I cant believe they lasted as long as they did. I guess it is to hard for LR to actually remove the manifold completely,, just shove a couple of extra gaskets in there. they could of only done it about six months ago.
 Trinity Landrover Cairns last worked on my car

Im wondering if my increased turbo lag/decreased fuel economy indicates I too have the same problem, sounds plausible
Big service coming up,add it to the list.

drilling the studs out to 10 mm is alot of work for no real gain I have had no problems since I have done the mods and bracing the manifold like the way you suggested out to 1@5 again I think that could lead to problems like cracking of the manifold due to the increased stresses.
Drill the holes on 1 and 5 bigger I did mine 2 mm then the 2 and 4 1.5mm bigger left number 3 original to keep it located in the right place

Is your rig sounding louder?
If its been a while you will also see the soot marks where it is leaking.

Hi George
Not really, hope to pull the cover and rocker cover off to seal the injector wiring on the weekend,I will have a good look then.
