Has any one replaced the clear lens on the headlight assembly (XBC 5015 (33/23) LNZ on a RRS 2006?
I can see lenses available for 2010 on, but not for earlier.
Any info on sourcing the part and feasibility of replacing the lens apreciated

I believe the headlight unit is sold as a complete assembly, though with care the polycarbonate clear front can be removed and "reglued" when putting back in.
My lights have suffered severe UV damage and need replacement - it is not the dulling that occurs with some headlights but has internal cracks like you find in old perspex that has been out in the sun too long.
So I would like to say someone that I am wrong and that I can buy the clear polycarbonate covers but I dont think so.

Mine went off on my 2011 RRS, fixed for a while with Maguire's headlight refurbishing kit.
Headlight replacements are eye wateringly expensive (I don't think that LR do just the lens from my research) plus my old one was due for a timing belt replacement, new car best fix!
Gave up and just bought a new TDV6 SE L494.[smilebigeye]

Headlights and Heaters in Abbotsford VIC will do them if you take off the car, they seal with UV protectant too.
About $300 i think.
I am in the same boat, paid some guy from New way enterprises and he did a quick fix, but still shoit.

Hi Garry, I had a detailer clean my lenses about a year ago and then bought some covers from Rimmers in the UK. Lenses are still as good as the day they were cleaned

Thanks Marty - no amount of polishing and cleaning will fix my covers as the polycarbonate has internal cracks in the material. I looked on the Rimmers site but no covers come up - do you have a link by any chance.
Cheers

Hi Garry,
I have had a look on the Rimmers site this morning and you are right I can't find them now either, they might still have them, not just have them on their web page. I have found contacting them sometimes beneficial, they have stuff available that isn't on the web page. I had a bit of a scout around and found a couple or three places in the US that sell them, Carid was one of them however these were tinted, not sure if you want clear or not.
I was looking to replace my own they have got a couple of stone chip "stars" in them so they must be doing something good.
Cheers Marty

These folks in NZ make a nice cover for d3/RRS:
Ute, Truck & Car Accessories - New Zealand. Manufacture & Distribution. - Airplex Auto Accessories (http://www.airplex.co.nz)
Local agent in NSW is:
FL Designed (http://www.fldesigned.com/)
Prompt service from both: $150 a pair delivered.
They also make a bonnet protector and wind deflectors.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that - something I have looked for before but not found.
Unfortunately they are headlamp protectors but not the actual polycarbonate covers (lens) of the headlamp assemply.

I wonder if the protectors would "dress up" the crappy looking deteriorated lenses

New headlight lenses - pair shipped from USA is 450 AUD.
Might be worth seeing if someone wants to group buy?

I found a guy who can replace the lenses but its still an expensive excercise at around $850 and thats with 2nd hand lenses. The lights need to be removed from the vehicle as the replacement lenses need to be baked on, apparently.
I have to remove my bull bar to get the lamps out so will check out another guy i found who restores the lense in situ for under $300.

Resurrecting an old thread - other than buying new headlamps $$$$$$ I have come to the conclusion that I have nothing to loose in sanding and then polishing my covers. This is them now [bigsad]

From what I can research is that originally poly lights have a UV coating on them and it is when this wears off the lights oxidise. Likewise when refurbished they quickly deteriorate without a UV coating - researching this does not seem to highlight something I can buy - except clear paint.
So what is the thoughts on spray painting them with clear acrylic car paint after they are refurbish - or some other suggestion that actually works.
Thanks

I was able to refurbish my headlights with the Rain X Headlight refurbishment kit.
But to finish them off, I used a small handheld 12v polisher and a fine cutting compound and polish, almost as good as new.
The Rain X comes with the UV coating to smear over the lenses when complete, to add the sun protection.

Thanks for that advice - I would need the Premium Kit for my lights but I cannot find anyone who sells the Premium Kit in Aust - looks like US only.
Looks like a great kit though.

Garry,
I'm in the same boat as of last week.
I'd tried a Maguire's kit....no good.
Tried a Cooper's kit from bursons..
Not great, but better. Came with a UV sealant. Awesome...but not like new.
So I went to the option of taking the headlights out - easy job.
Wet sanding on bench with 800, 1200,1500.
Then a good polish, not too fine. Polish again and again.
Clean with alcohol, and they look pretty good, but no clear on them
SO bought a USA made plasti- clear ( used to clear over plastidip) and I put about 2 wet coats on...it's still drying as of yesterday, little tacky waiting for it to harden up so I can polish if needed.
I had a can of auto clear, which must have more hardner in it, so I might use this for the other light.
Some photos, in the link.

Just to add... sanding wet and keeping it clean. And lots of water until it all looks foggy, then move to the next sandpaper.
Kits only really consist of sandpaper anyway, and never enough.
As for clear. Body shop supplies sell the one I'll be using on the next headlight.

Hi Jeremy - thanks for that - what you did is what I was intending to do.
However the Premium Rain X kit has all that in it - including the drill sanding pad - so everything that is needed.
Problem is I cannot find any one in Aust who sells the Premium Kit - sellers just have the basic one that would not work on my heavily oxidized and cracked lights.
Cheers

If your clear coat you choose to use doesn’t have UV filtering it’s a waste of effort.
Polish using Aerogard, then use a kit. You can also apply 3M UV clear film on the outside to prevent it reoccurring

Yes I agree - that has what caused the excess oxidation in the first place - I had foolishly polished off the coating (not knowing better) when have to cut back nearby paint on the car. Hence my newer query of what to use to reapply once the lights had been sanded.
You can also apply 3M UV clear film on the outside to prevent it reoccurring Is this just the clear version of the material used to wrap a car? If so I assume it can get around the tight bits of the lights.
Thanks for the input - great stuff.

That’s the stuff. A bit of heat will help mould it.

Looks great - what coating did you put on at the end to stop UV discolouring the cleaned lens.
Also why didn't you remove the entire light fitting from the car to do the work - just unclip the power plugs and pull up the lever and out pops the entire fitting.
Cheers

This is the Coating I put on it, 3 coats, 10 mins apart and then left for 24 hours before waxing up.
Thought about taking out the lights, but decided easier with them being held in place and taped off. Used the supercheap drill sanding kit, 240gsm graduating up to 2000gsm.167539

I've done plenty of lights without those stupid expensive kits, for any vehicle detailing things I always see what Larry at AMMO has done. You can use any clear on headlights after you clean the old coating off and polish the lens but some have UV ratings and should last longer than others. Removing poly lenses from headlights is very easy too, I've done that before to install some DRL in a Magna I had for a while, you just need a big enough oven.

This was my headlight lens in 2020 - now far worse - as mentioned back then there are internal cracks in the poly carbonate. Really not worth while polishing as the internal cracks would still be there.
So finally decided to bit the bullet and buy new lens. Started with Powerful UK which are a good price but when DHL shipping was included they ended up being nearly $500 delivered. Looked for local suppliers but prices were nearly the same. Spotted an Australian Ebay listing for $190 with the items being shipped from Sydney - hit buy now and got a $10 reduction so were $180 so that was good - BUT - then advised nil stock so got a refund.
Looked further but were all chinese listings and posting from china - my experience in the past is that these are dodgy and take forever to arrive. However I spotted a seller from China with 100% feedback with the lens for $169.86 including GST and including shipping.
So I took and chance and ordered them at 11.30 last Thursday night and they arrived at 10.30 this morning - from China. Better than an Aust sender and is a chinese seller.
The lens look great and I will put them in before too long - just thinking about whether to put angel ring DRLs in at the same time or just go with the DRLs in the fog lights.
