Hi. I’ve read a on a few threads on here and others and would like to know if anyone has successfully coded a replacement key fob to their Discovery 4 (2014) with any of the tools like nanocom. Many say it can. So I’m keen to know if anyone has actually has pulled it off personally. Dealer and workshop say no and what extrodianary money to do it.
Rather buy a nanocom and get something for my money.

Get a GAP IID tool, it’s a better unit for later vehicles IMO..
And yes, it’s easy..

i have read up what I can on these and I thought it was a no for programming keys. This would be my first choice as long as it can. I intend to get a tool anyway for remote travel. Local programmer filling my head with rolling codes and saying simply not possible. Mmmmm does my head in.

Here's an extract from the Gap IID Manual. There is also another section for these models "Key programming (VIN locked L319-04, L320-05):"
Preparation
• Ensure all keys to be programmed are available.
• Ensure the vehicle is unlocked
• All the doors, including the boot, must be closed.
• It is recommended to sit inside the vehicle with all the doors closed whilst this procedure is
performed.
• Regular non-Bluetooth IIDTool, second hardware version: Usage of the PC-based controller
is mandatory. The IIDTool must be connected to the computer until the process is completed.
The option will be displayed on your computer screen. Please consult section 2.8.5 of this user
manual for more details on the PC-based interface. If using a laptop, make sure the battery
charger is connected. Close all programs, disable all automatic updates and screen saver. The
computer does not need to be connected to the internet.
Instructions
Follow the instructions shown on screen to program the transponders. Once completed, the key fobs
(lock/unlock) will be programmed by following these instructions. When prompted by the tool:
• Switch the ignition on and then off again within 5 seconds
• Remove key from the ignition
• Ensure all doors are closed
Note : The following steps need to be completed within 30 seconds. Do not turn on the ignition until all

keys are programmed. If this occurs, the sequence will have to be restarted from the beginning. When
prompted by the IIDTool:
• Press and hold the Unlock button on the first key to be programmed. Whilst the button is being
pressed, press the lock button 3 times within 10 seconds.
• Release both buttons simultaneously.
• Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all other available keys.
Add a key (VIN Locked L322-10, L319-10, L320-10, L538, L359 2013+)
This routine is used to add one (1) new key to the vehicle. It will not remove previously programmed
keys.
Instructions
An already programmed key is needed to begin the procedure. Instructions will be displayed on screen.
When prompted, press and hold the unlock button of the remote. Pressing the unlock button will be
done a few times in a row to complete all programming steps. The horn will be activated during the
procedure.
Note :
• A used key can be programmed to a vehicle. Once programmed, it will no longer work on the
previous vehicle. The emergency start (dead remote battery) will not work on the new vehicle.
• Both key models (slim and bigger one) can be programmed on any model and year.

Halfway through the instructions above is says remove the key from the Ignition. So apologising in advance for my lack of knowledge but clearly the 2014 doesn’t have a key like that but assume the bottom half deals with the later models perhaps. If you have/ buy the ID tool with Bluetooth does this negate the need for connecting to a pc or laptop.
If one purchases the IID tool is it vin locked to your vehicle?
Tombie
Given all the above is their only one model IID tool to get?

Hi Steve.
My 2013 D4 doesn't have a key either.
clearly the 2014 doesn’t have a key like that but assume the bottom half deals with the later models perhaps. My assumption is yes it would but I would need to check with their support to confirm this. Their support people are very responsive. Ask them any question you like and they will advise you accordingly. I did this before I bought mine and was very satisfied with their service. My copy of the manual may not be the latest. This is from their web page. As you will see it clearly says it does but maybe the manual is a bit vague.
Advanced Programming Functions
Vehicle control modules software updates (ECU Re-Flashing*)
Exclusive content available (modified firmware etc, see FAQ)
Engine tuning, EGR Patching, Speed limiter raising and more (purchased separately***)
Key programming (except Range Rover L322 2002-2005)
Car Configuration / Personalization (CCF editing, full CCF access upon request)
Height Adjustment (front, rear or all)
Suspension individual sensor calibration (needed after a repair)
Backup of original height and CCF values
3 personalized height profiles
If you have/ buy the ID tool with Bluetooth does this negate the need for connecting to a pc or laptop. I have the Bluetooth version and I only used my pc to do the initial setup etc using software they provide. In daily use, everything is done via the app on my phone.
If one purchases the IID tool is it vin locked to your vehicle? It is VIN locked but can be used for some functions on other cars. The advanced functions (I have pasted in above) can only be done on the VIN car.
Given all the above is their only one model IID tool to get. There is a Bluetooth and a non Bluetooth version.
Martin
I just submitted a request to GAP support asking about the key issue. I'll let you know what they have to say.

I repeat... I have programmed several keys to later vehicles.. works fine.
Why waste GAPs time on the key...
Only get the Bluetooth version!
VIN lock does basics on other cars.
You can add multiple VIN licences to the same tool though...

The lack of key is answered in the second section of the instructions where it CLEARLY shows “Add a key (VIN Locked L322-10, L319-10 etc”
This is stating “L319 from MY10” - that’s how they write it..
The top was for 04 -09 models...

Why waste GAPs time on the key...
Hi Tombie.
Because I was not certain about it and didn't want to mislead Steve. I read the section concerned and to me it looked more like an addendum to the rest of the text which led me to be unsure about it. I know it says that the app will say what to do but to my mind, given the more copious detail in the previous sections, it was not clear hence the query to GAP. The other thing was that the other sections say "Key Programming" whereas this section says "Add A Key".

I found that duckworths had the best price when I bought mine. Contact Dan Roberts and mention that you got his name on this forum. His e-mail address is dan.roberty@duckworth.co.uk. There is a Group Buy thread, you could also check there as well as googling the name and some other suppliers will pop up. Don't forget to factor in freight when comparing prices.

Hi Steve. Thought you might be interested in the GAP response.
Q1. Just trying to clarify your instructions on key programming on pages 114-118 of the user manual.
Reading the instructions it seems to imply that the tool only programs key with an actual key to insert into the ignition as it talks about turning the ignition on and off and putting it into accessory mode. My LR D4 does not have a key as such, it only has a press button remote. What is the procedure for remote only cars?
A1. Instructions for your car are at page 118.
Add a key (VIN Locked L322-10, L319-10,L320-10, L538, L359 2013+)
Q2. I did see that section but wasn’t sure as it is headed “Add A Key” where the other say “Key Programming” and I thought that this section was an add on so to speak.
Where it says This routine is used to add one (1) new key to the vehicle. It will not remove previously programmed keys. Does this mean that I can only add one key or one key at a time? That is, can I program as many keys as I like or is there a limit?
A2. There is a limit actually but I think it's 10keys. We've used the same function name as LR which can indeed be confusing...
Hope this helps.

Thanks Martin for the extra detective work.
Just to be clear I do want to “add a key” as I have just one. I think I did read somewher that you can program up to 10 keys. ( wife reckons in need more!). She’s probably right. Talking to my expedition 130 defender owning son ( he works in IT) last night and he can’t wait to have a crack at it. Good grief. Off topic can one apply better tunes with this. Island 4x4 have them for 354 pound so not bad. Freight is reasonable

Hi Steve.
Not a problem, I wanted to find out too. I have no experience with the tunes so cannot advise you there but Gap have this on their web site. I would write to Dan Roberts before you buy to check their price. It was quite a bit lower than elsewhere when I bought mine in March last year.

So my IID tool arrived and all activated and updated. Go to add a key function and follow the on screen instructions. It tells me I will need a functioning key as well as the new one. Which I have. I get to a step which says I will be “required to press and hold the unlock button when prompted”. Press to continue. So I press to continue and get a message “operation failed. E7 error”. I don’t even get the opportunity to press the key. The battery in the new fob test fine. So I am out of ideas here. The key admittedly was an eBay buy and 434 MHz. The motherboard has similar numbers on it to the original. What am I doing wrong?

Just tried the key on your advice but no go. I have tried perhaps 10 times. I am curious as I did the set up steps and was sent a code but the screen, my iPhone, did not give me the option to enter the code. I was assuming it was automatic activation but reading the manual is does say a code is needed. How can I check if it’s activated. My thought here is if it’s not activated properly perhaps this function won’t work. It does tell I have two keys registered and actions like shutting the engine down in the add a key process works on que.

I've had exactly the same experience and no luck programming a similarly purchased fleaBAY key and have given up. No luck with from GAP which is understandable as they can't really do anything other than suggesting to update the firmware which I did - I've assigned blame on the fleaBAY key.

it hard to know whether it’s the cheap key as the operation seems to drop out prematurely. Gap diagnostics reputation for good service I hope rings true. Anyhow it clearly states in there manual that is can add a key for the 319-10 series. So I expect a result given the hefty outlay.
What I don’t get that is there is not one reference to an E7 error code in nearly 150 pages of their manual. I shot off an email but with the time differences I don’t expect a reply for 24-48hours.
A google search has one hit vaguely to do with a d3 which apparently was fixed via firmware and something to with pressing the brake pedal during the operation. I’ll update in due course. But to say I’m disappointed is an understatement. Been like a kid waiting for Santa for two weeks to get the tool.

Well hi to anyone following this thread. After various email exchanges with gap diagnostics and subsequent emailing all the ECU info to Patrick, from gap diagnostics, he has confirmed that the 2014 ecu module in this model D4 is an upgraded version and they are currently working on engineering for this ECU. His responses were quick and respectful but “Add a key” function is not possible at this stage. Most other functions appear ok but I have not tested any of them. To say I’m disappointed is an understatement as it’s stated in the manual from gap that it is doable with no mention that “later” model D4’s may suffer “some” reduced functionality. I am sure they will sort it in the long run but I need a key NOW. Off to landrover I go......buckle up.

Hi Turtle, good luck with LR. I just had a replacement key programmed in for my 2013.5 HSE. Luckily this was done under an extended warranty as it apparently cannot be done without replacing the transponder in the vehicle, which is expensive in itself. However it gets even harder as my independent LR specialist did not have access to the software to add the new key and had to book a timeslot with LR to use their equipment. From the information that LR provided me and then confirmed with the steps the mechanic had to go through, it appears that when the 2013 update occurred, it became impossible to add a new key without the proprietary software.

Gap diagnostics are still confident and have produced an iid tool firmware update and currently working on a fix. So hope to have a resolve soon one way or another. The goods news is I think it would be nigh on impossible to steal it? Lol. Anyway I lost the key not landrover but why do they have to make it so tricky.

After some to and fro from Patrick at gap diagnostics, firmware updates and the like I am pleased to report that my $25 eBay has been successfully progragrammed to my 2014 Discovery using iiD tool BT. . I am stoked to say the least. Think I’ll code a few more. So for less than the price of a new key from Landrover I now now have an awesome diagnostic tool to boot. Well done gap. not sure if it’s a beta or not but I assume if you go to the gap updater app and get version build special 2448 and update your tool then you need to do ecu flash / kvm update. However if you are in my position I would email gap for instruction. Just the time zones are a pain but be patient.

Hi all
Thought I'd add to this thread. I just got a new key for my D4 as I had only one key.
The D4 went into an independent LR specialist to get the new key fob programmed to the car on 17th July. They had ordered it from the UK with my cars VIN a few weeks before. But my D4 didn't accept the key and it immobilised itself. They couldn't start it and even the steering was locked. They had to get it towed LR centre. Eventually got the car back on the 23rd.
It needed a new a new KVM. New keys are now required to be shipped with new KVM. The LR specialist used software from Autologic I think. They said now that they are aware of this new requirement future customers won't have the probs that I had.
(I had earlier posted about this in the wrong section What did you do with or to your Disco today (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-1-a/207677-what-did-you-do-your-disco-today-106.html))
