If one had to change a clutch in a td5 defender , is it easier to pull the motor out or drop the gearbox and transfer ?

I'm not an expert but I believe it is generally done by dropping the gearbox (and transfer). This is how my clutch was replaced and is also what is described in the Haynes workshop manual. Looks to me as though it requires pretty good knowledge and equipment.

AFAIK it's less likely to stuff up the transmission pump putting the gearbox in,than putting the motor in - easier to manhandle the box with a decent jack.
Edit: sorry 'bout that, Chief! Was thinking of auto instead. Must be Alzheimer's.... now where was I?

On a TD5 easier to drop gearbox/transfer case, too much **** on a TD5 to disconnect.
