I know people that have them on their Commodores and Falcons and are very happy with them. Some have had impacts and after a couple of days they return to normal shape. Do not know about 4x4s though.

Seen them take a big hit and return to shape in a day or 2...
However, all the damaged panel behind the now straight again bar was still crumpled.
I'd avoid them on 4wds like the plague, they dont cut the mustard, wont take a winch, and dont work well enough on a 4wd to provide the adequate protection in a decent shunt...
And they look freaking awful
Cheers

What needs to be remembered is that a bullbar is not there to protect you in a shunt. Its there to ensure you can make it home safely if you hit a member of our vast wildlife community. A bullbar can often be a hinderance in a shunt as the energy is not absorbed by soft bendy body panels but is instead transferred through the whole car via the chassis which can do far more damage, and often not be visible. However as mentioned above the smart bar is often impractical to 4wders given its lack of ability to take a which and many accessories such as spot lights and aerials. Matt

I know a guy who has one on a Series 1 Discovery & does a fair bit of off road driving with no problems.
The firs time I saw it I thought in was a regular bar, only looking closer you could see it was a "smart bar".
As for lights etc, you just need to run an earth wire as well as power - not a big problem.

A search on this place "Smart AND Bar" with the post option chosen will bring up some stuff https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Like this:

And Mike they don't make them for Defenders and the ones they make for Taxis (pedestrian proof) do look like $hit but the Discovery model looks like a proper job:

And yes if you need a winch then forget them for Discoveries ...I think that Toyotas are catered for in that department.
Ace, driving lights and aerials can be accommodated.
Benefits: lighter than steel stronger than alloy and more absorbing in an impact than both.

expect to pay between $900 and $1000 at places like TJM

but instead of having to repair the car AND replace the bar, you just need to repair the car...
saving you about $1000.
they absorb the impact of animal strikes a LOT better than any other bar on the market and in doing so protect the vehicle a lot better, and as for aerials and driving lights; brackets can be purchased with all the bars to suit the customers needs (i'm pretty sure it's for all... :? )
but winches can only be fitted to toyota and nissan bars...
cheers,

There was a show on them about 2 years ago and the car and Bull Bar sustains little to no damage compared with a steel bar. I think it was a show to do with pedestrians and cars and 4x4’s with Bull Bars.
And an Alloy bar is useless for 4x4 work hit a rock and it will bend almost to the radiator.
The poly bar dose go back in to shape after impact. I prefer steel though.
