I'm new to the 2007 D3 SE, it's got nearly worn out 265 60 18 yokohama's and I want to do a little bit of off-roading and get some extra height either by suspension lift or bigger tyres. I have a few options I'm throwing around.

Get a play set of A/T tyres and a road set and change them when necessary (sounds like a pain). May still have rubbing issues if play tyres are bigger
Put some same size A/T's on then I wont have to change the size of the spare tyre (i like the monsta A/T) and get a set of GOE rubber rods to lift it further. Plus a set of sliders to protect the sills.
Put a bigger set of tyres on, but there are concerns of rubbing. I have rear A/C and dont want to move the lines. I like 265 65 18 size and dont want to go much wider but tyre choice is limited and expensive I dont want to go more than $250 or so per corner.
Are the GOE rods a good/cheap solution for a bit of lift when needed?
any other suggestions?

Cheers

I went with the Monsta's in A/T's and 265/60/18, dont really need bigger and if you want a lift get some GOE rods or a Llams kit.

Good advice thanks mate. For simplicity I reckon that’s the go, have you had experience with the GOE rods? Those plus some sliders will make it better off road

The rods are sitting in my glovebox ready to go.

I have a 2007 SE with 18's and run Cooper AT3's in 265/60/18.

Done a little off roading in them but not heaps. Happy with the ride quality and noise.

I have the same. At high end of inflation range and they aquaplane on wet roads. On last trip I had a stone puncture right in the middle of the treat from a 80km speed gravel road. I won’t buy Coopers again.

Ive met others who love their longevity on bitumen.

What pressure do you run?

Having worked for a different American Tyre company that used same factory, have found that they work generally at a lower pressure due to their increased load capacity designed for F350s

42 F & 45 R PSI from memory. Dropped back to 35 & 37 PSI.

Despite only doing about 5-10,000km one has developed a whiring noise like a failing bearing. It’s the tyre it disappears when I swap or rotate tyres.

I generally change over to my 2nd set of wheels with 19” Winrun cheapo HTs when 18s are not required. The cheapo Winruns were supposed to be an interim tyre. But I rate them on road and gravel tracks. Never had a flat, slipping or noise issue.

I would say the initial pressures are too high

And I would rather a Tyre with good grip and performance rather than huge kilometres. Normally move my tyres on when they are down to 60 percent

So after doing some mild off-roading the other day and bending my side steps, i'm thinking a road set with standard tyres, I picked up a set of 4 mags and near new tyres for $500, and have a set of play tyres as well. I reckon a set of 17's with some larger than standard tyres, maybe muddies, plus the lift rods and it will be nearly unstoppable! [smilebigeye]

Motivation was also watching the youtube vid of Monkey gum trail with the D2, D3 (looks same as mine) and a Patrol. Would like to do that track.

Yep, I have the GOE Rocksliders and the GOE Lift Rods (and bought the GOE Air Compressor Cover and did 3 days training with Gordon from GOE too)...... I installed all the parts myself and they work great, though I have to admit, I've only ever used the Lift Rods just the once.

Here is a pic whilst using the Lift Rods and showing the Rocksliders.
