Anyone heard of Ford's plan to release a new 4x4 based on the Discovery3 platform? Spoke to a friend in Eastern States the other day who read in a trade magazine (he can not remember which one though) that Ford are going down this path. Expect to see Ford badged Disco's soon and they will probablly sell Millions. Flashbacks of the Maverick.

makes sense on Fords part.
You get the division with the most experience in a certain area to design the architecture for your platforms worldwide.
Keeps devepoment cost under control and are far more easily amortised across a larger number of vehicles built/sold.
GM are doing this with Holden, who are responsible for large platform rear wheel drive worldwide. They seem to be able to do it cheaper/faster than North America or Europe.

I'm not sure that the way things are set up that this could happen :?
That said, the X Type jag is on a mondeo platform, but I don't know any fords on platforms from the PAG group.
Anyway, it would kill the sales of the D3, and LR has just started turning a proffit.
It would be a dark day for LR though if they used all the gagetry. If it was just the platform without the bells and whisles it probably wouldn't matter though.

Dunno. If the cars are produced at Solihull, it might be good for LR. If the cars are produced in the USA, then that might mean that Ford USA produce cars badged as LR.
If the price drops in the USA due to higher and local production, that may flow down through to the Disco 3 'cos the costs have been amortised more quickly or over a larger production run.
I've heard rumours of the TDV6 going into the Ford Territory but equally there has been comment that the engine is too expensive for the Territory.
If it did go into the Territory, that may be good for local LR owners - especially if Ford are set up to service it.

The Madza 3 is based on the old Ford Focus platform. Not sure about the new Focus - haven't had a look underneath.
These cars look totally different unlike the Laser and 323 rebadging years and have differnt engines.

They might be able to control their dealerships a bit better then

It would be logical for Ford dealerships to also handle LR. But it wouldn't necessarily be cheaper for the customer or result in better service.

I think it would be a good thing, especially if it reduced the costs of LR through greater production volumes.
More common componentry = reduced parts costs and greater service network.
LR must get their unit costs down and increase quality if they are to remain competitive.
Should be interesting...

Unless there is a coup or mass sackings in PAG, it aint going to happen.
PAG are trying to mimmick Lexus in terms of branding and positioning. Notice how Lexus is totally divorced from their supermarket brand, Toyota ?
This is what PAG are doing sacking all their reginal dealers. They don't want the riff raff sullying the brand.

So they just make the Ford dealers put up a separate little building with Land Rover all over it, something a bit classier than your average Ford pile of corrugated iron.
Then they wheel the vehicles around the back to the same workshop as the Fords. No problem.
LR are pretty stupid if they want to ape Lexus. Everyone knows Lexi (is that a word?) are just rebadged Toyotas.
I don't care what the dealerships look like. What interests me is the service they provide for their customers. They need to emphasise substance over style. Its no wonder so many LR owners (myself included) prefer to go to independent LR specialists rather than dealers. The specialists usually know their stuff.

The current Ford Focus, Mazda 3 and one of the Volvos all share the same platform.

I Would hope it might mean you could interchange parts. The Ford badged parts would be cheaper.
They would probably only use the platform though and change everything else.

Well, at least a D3 platform on the Ford Explorer will stop them (the Explorers) flipping over https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
F.O.R.D. (Fix Or Repair Daily) is what we do anyway :x

The Lexus are just upgraded Toyotas and are made on the same platform.
To the point where the LandCruiser and Lexus 4X4 are almost identical. Many cars are based on the same platform but become a totally different vehicle from that point up. It will be interesting to see if this is the case or Ford are just going to rebadge with a few cosmetic changes. Mark my words PAG will not have a say if Ford think they are on a winner.

None of it really matters.
The Japs copy Landrover innovations anyway, so eventually all 4WD's will be Landy copies!
Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

Lexus are not just upgraded Toyotas. They are Toyotas. It is just in some markets they sell them as Lexus as those markets might baulk at paying $100k+ for a Toyota but would do so without a blink for a Lexus.

I agree. Generally there are a few cosmetic additions/changes and or some upgrades and options in the Lexus. I compared the 2 4x4s a while back. I think at the time the Lexus came standard with a satnav system and the Cruiser did not. Only generally minor stuff in reality. It is like RRs, generally they are not much better than Disco's but people do not blink at the price.

The funniest part is that is one of our work utes. It left us stranded in Sydney for 5 days with that break down. If anyone tells you your Landrover is inreliable and then jumps into their big tough F250 you can safely point at their vehicle and laugh your arse off https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
