Im looking at either a D3HSE/SE v8 or TDV6 with around 100k or possible spending a bit more and getting a TDV6 D4 around 150kms. Which would you all recommend.
whats better the better buy/value?

Or....Do I bite the bullet and go for the 3.0L for another 10k.

I guess i just want to get opinions on how much better a D4 is over the D3. This new rig will be replacing a CX5.

Thanks.

A few people have been through this process and there's a few good threads if you have a search.

Here's a good one to start with:
Price vs Age - D3 or D4? (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/220533-price-vs-age-d3-d4.html)

The V8 is the pick of the petrol though to my understanding it was discontinued for the MY07 year onwards. The MY07 had a few electrical upgrades, most notably the upgrade to a two speed canbus system, which fixed the cascading canbus error issues previous models had (such as a blown brake light causing the car to drop to the bump stops). That was one of the reasons (along with the fact the V8 I tested was in a terrible state) I ended up with a petrol V6 instead. (You also get auto power windows for both driver and passenger, among other things, but I'd happily trade that for the V8 sound :) )

As far as petrol or diesel, what will you use the car for? Here's a quick summary of what I'd choose:

Towing heavy loads: diesel for economy and torque

Touring: diesel for range, though petrol is fine for most areas (might need some octane booster and a good fuel filler filter).

Regular Short trips: petrol as diesels hate that.

According to a number of people on here the petrol is cheaper to run long term, even though fuel is more expensive and you use more of it. They're also generally cheaper to buy, though the gap seems to have closed in the last few years.

Hope that helps!

Pretty sure you can get a V8 through to 2012 or later.

Yes 2010 - 12 D4 V8 but Dan is talking about D3s.

I'd say a D4 TDV6 2.7 2011 7 seater with e-diff.

I would go the 2.7 D4,pretty well sorted.
They are good value.
No cracked inlet manifolds, second turbo and actuater dramas, even has a dipstick.[biggrin]

Certainly has enough get up and go,if you want more,EGR blank and tune gives it quite a few more herbs.

Will fit LR genuine 17's or 18's as well.

I got a 2005 V8 recently and love it. I just did a major service with my indy and compared to my TD5 and it was bit cheaper. I do a lot of short trips in between long trips, so it suits my needs. Love the acceleration. I’ve been driving diesels for over 20years and started looking for a TDV6, but after assessing my needs, talking to my mechanic and reading around here about what to look in a TDV6 I decided that with my budget (sub 25k) I could get a V8, do all the known mechanical updates and still have a little change.

Good luck.

Yeah. I regret the 3.0L now I’ll admit. So many disadvantages for very few advantages.

Thanks for the Input, I'm leaning towards keeping the CX5 (15,000kms on it) and upgrade the D2 to a D3 V8 HSE.

Mostly using it for city trips and the odd trip away or weekend 4x4. lucky to do 10,000kms a year.

Not sure I want to have 2 Land Rovers in the garage to maintain. From all reports the D3 V8 is alot of car for the money.

Mind you a high km D4 for low 20's may sway my verdict.

Picking up a descent D4 for low 20's,that wasn't a wreck would be like looking for rockin horse poo.

The D3 V8 is probably the go.

Anyway,good luck with the looking.

Even a high k D4 was 10k more than my D3 so it was an easy decision.
