Hi Everyone.
My mechanic and i are stumped and need your suggestions, please. I have FL2 TD4 and 150k KM. A whine has developed in the engine. It moderates inline with engine revs. Using a stethoscope it was traced to the power steering pump. This turned out to be false as fitting a new pump did not fix the issue. I should mention that when the pump was replaced the whole power steering system was drained and flushed before installing the new pump. The alternator has been suspected but the whining does not change when the electrical load is changed and the stethoscope does not register any whine from the alternator.

Has anyone come across this issue themselves? Or maybe someone knows what is causing this whining noise.

Does the sound still sound like the power steer pump? It may be the screen in the bottom of the reservoir is blocked. They can't be removed for cleaning the reservoir needs to be replaced. The noise of the pump should change when you turn the wheels.

Hi woko,

Thanks for the suggestion. We will investigate that as a possible cause. The sound does change with steering movement, but only a very little amount. On full steering lock we actually get power steering fluid spraying out of somewhere, possibly the reservoir? Do you know where i can buy FL2 aftermarket or used parts in NSW.

TIA

Try Mario from Roverlord. He is a member on here. He is in Vic but gives great service and posts parts. Send him a email. Contact details here. Roverlord Off Road Spares (http://www.rlors.com.au)
If you have a leak this could cause air to enter the system and it will be noisy because the oil is airated

Would also suggest changing P/W Steer reservoir. As changing fluid does not help, if filter in Res is blocked it restricts fluid flow and will cause pump to struggle and eventually fail. Easy job, and Res is quite cheap to buy. Had similar prob. on our 07 with dirty fluid, and did it as a precaution on our current 2012 which also had dirty fluid.
