On the 57 88 with an unidentified stromberg - was looking around in the engine bay today and noticed there is no vacum advance pipe. Cant actually see anywhere on the carby where it might have exited either so may be blanked off? Has been sat in a stable for three years - fired up almost 1st start with fresh fuel and a good battery. Runs okish , bit lumpy and slight hunting. Havent touched anything. Coil runs very hot after say 5 mins stationary. My question is should i fit a vacum advance pipe if i can find a point on the carby - and is the hot coil a symptom of no va pipe or has the coil just had it. I’m just driving this around the property picking up wood etc - its not road going.
All comments gratefully received as usual.
cheers,
D

I can't remember where the vacuum pickup is on the Solex, but it is likely not available on the Stromberg. I would suspect the coil is getting hot because it is one designed to be used with a ballast, not used on Series Landrovers. In other words, it is an 8volt coil, not a 12volt one.

137364 On Stromberg the vacuum advance line fits into the brass fitting at base of carby.

137365 On the Solex the vacuum advance screws into a taped thread in the base just above were the carby bolts to the manifold.

Mines been missing from my '56 for the last 20 years[bigsmile1]. Still get about 18-20mpg.
Doesn't make a lot of difference on a S1 because the throttle pedal is usually on the floor anyway[bigsmile]
RE the coil most likely an 8v coil, as John said.
Cheers,
Terry

Thanks Gents. Pics always useful.
I’ll go take another look now i know where i should be looking.
Should i be blanking the vacum advance off at the dizzy or does it make no difference, blanked off or not blanked off.
cheers,
D

These are the pics of the current set up. I can see the vacum advance is blanked off at the carby - not at the dizzy. Thanks again.
