Hi All,

My 1995 Defender 300tdi has 320,000km and the turbo has started to make an unhealthy noise, a whine, whistle, bearing complaints, etc. So i checked it and indeed the turbine/compressor shaft has quite a lot of play in it.

There are loads of aftermarket ones on ebay and the internet from $250-500. Very cheap indeed and no doubt chinese, but any good? Does anyone have a good experience with a cheaper turbo?

Or is proper OEM or genuine the way to go?

Also I have been told to find the cause for the failure, what could it be apart from poor oil flow (haven't checked yet), disintegrated air filter (the air filter is fine), cracked intake hose (its fine). Or is it just possible that 320,000km is enough for it fail on its own. Ive only done about 60,000km. So I can not know how often the oil was changed by previous owners.

In any case does anyone have a good experience with a cheaper option I do not know about, like someone who rebuilds them etc?

ok Bye all,

George

I think the K's are a fairly reasonable cause for your issues.

Most people seem to go for Garrets or (if you're well heeled enough) VNT turbos.

Get on the web version of the forum, go to the bottom of the page and find the search box that says "Search Aulro website only", and search for 300tdi turbo in there.

Hope that helps a bit. [biggrin]

If it has not damaged the housings, then a CHRA is a cheap option. New moving parts and just recycle your inlet/outlet housings.

I used a Melett (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-Melett-Turbo-CHRA-Land-Range-Rover-Defender-Discovery-300tdi-T2-452055/391824189481?epid=22003903299&hash=item5b3a8aa829:g:15MAAOSwX61ZEHeM) core to rebuild a GT2256V on my old 300 TDI D1. Appeared good quality parts and they have a pretty good reputation (did at that point in time, can't vouch for now) worked well on installation. Just one small clerical error saw my parts initially going to Austria :bangin:

Hi,
I am in the Hawkesbury area of Sydney and have a turbo off my 300tdi that had only done 98000 kms following an engine rebuild (we put a new one on at the rebuild time)-have just replaced with a new one from DPL so it is here--say $50, also is on a 200tdi manifold that was used to boost performance a bit, think made by DPL. Only replaced it as we needed as much go as possible for towing, took off car only a month ago.
