Usually lurk around the Series and Defender forums since I lost the D2 to an eastern grey.
Well I just bought a P38a, MY2000, 260k km.
Has a few minor issues, EAS of course, although it has 4 new air springs and a compressor. EAS ecu seems to be a little demented.
Oh and a HEVAC blend motor, fun coming[biggrin]

And the brake hydraulic accumulator might be stuffed, not sure yet.

Has 265/60 tyres on 18 inch rims, the fronts rub a little at access height. Not too bad. Speedo reads ~8% low.

Hopefully the 15 year apprenticeship with the D2 will help with the troubleshooting.
I think the PO was happy to see it go - he spent ~$15k over 5 years on maintenance.
Mostly labour to a local 'mechanic?.

So here we go...

Cheers,
Terry

He also has blend motor issues and his owner only has a 13 year D2 apprenticeship...
It helps - a bit.

Welcome to the club :)

I have yet to come across a really broken AES ECU so I guess it's something else, sensors maybe. The HEVAC blend motors... what can I say :D they should never have let the french make that stuff (valeo). The accumulator is an easy fix.

If you have any problems, just shoot a message up here!

Cheers,

Thanks for the welcome[smilebigeye]
Not getting too excited about fixing stuff yet, I will ease into it as needed. Drives ok. 12l/100km, I can live with that.
There is a winch mounted on the front which is coming off. Someone has already walked into it (Ouch)
P38's don't need winches-right?. I know of a Defender it can be fitted to.[bigsmile1]

is it 4 or 4.6, I wish I could get 12 per 100, mine is 16/17l per 100. The 4litre would be a tad under powered wouldn't it
cheers

Ps twin to mine except mine is 98

Its a 4.6 HSE

12/100 is what the message centre says, highway running.
Tank fill to tank fill, so average, and kms corrected for the tyres was12.3/100. Over 2 tanks (95 litres - that hurt the plastic!)

Performance feels about the same as the Davis chipped TD5, I still miss the torque at 1900 though.

When I picked it up from PO, who had just driven it home, it was showing 25l/100km[bigsad]

Thanks, I think the driving experience is well worth the maintenance required.
I gave up explaining that to Toyo drivers years ago.
"If I have to explain it, you just don't get it" [bigsmile][bigsmile]
That goes for Series and Defender too.

12l/100 [bigsad] I almost thought it was a diesel... I can get that kind of value when I reset the consumption monitor whilst driving on the highway and I can keep going for a while, but normal driving I never get below 16l/100km and that's when driving veeeery easy.

Then again, where I live we do not know what space is :D the nearest highway is 15K's away and even then you can't drive on cruise control for long stretches unless it is past 23 and before 6. I guess from that point of view I basicly live in one big city :)

As far as the winch goes, I have needed it on several occasions but I might have been actually trying to get it stuck [bigwhistle]

Cheers,

I feel better now re fuel ecomey

I don't really know why it is so good re fuel. I don't think the PO did anything to it.
Might be just my driving - I gave the leadfoot stuff away quite a few years ago.
My normal drive is home at 900m elevation down to Bairnsdale at sea level, 280km return ~twice a week.
I do travel at 100kmh+ where possible.
I have read that they run lean at mid range speeds, don't know.
Defender gives me 9l/100 for the same trips.
Still learning.

They do burn a bit lean at certain rpm's, so much so that it could be a problem, according to some.

I since have fitted tornado chips and it has improved my consumption and the engine is running a tad bit cooler. My increased consumption currently is probalby (I found out yesterday) a once again locked up vcu -sigh-

Hi Terry . I’m happy to purchase the winch carrier off you. If interested. With or with out winch.
Paul.
