View Full Version : Knocking sound when cornering.

Just thought this was worth a thread for those trying to eliminate possible causes of a knock/clunk, kind of sounding like a LCA. I finally nailed it down to the transfer case after reading another members post and because it started to make the wheels judder from 3/4 to full steering lock.
Probably the easiest and most difinitive test of elimination, put car in neutral, jump out and pull the plug on the transfer case solenoid. If it goes away, you know what it is.
Changed the oil and performed the two calibrations and it now drives 100% again(note I did try both calibration only before, and just a fluid change, and no difference, I had to do the calibrations after the fluid change). It was 40,000 KMs since the last change, and fluid was still full just dirty.

Also, although the gearbox fault light will illuminate, it's not a problem that needs to be cleared to go away, just plug it back in when you get home and it will clear itself for those without a IID tool yet.

While on the subject, it was $140 for 2L of the Ravenol Special oil required, shipped from the U.K for $26 cheaper than the dealer of course.
The symptoms started with clunking while taking a corner, and what felt like a worn half shaft as you get clunking when applying the throttle after a long distance brake. Or a CV as the clunk while cornering....

Sorry, what do you mean by transfer box calibration?
I've changed my diff oils tonight and will be doing the transfer box tomorrow night but unsure what else is involved (i have no symptoms or issues, this is maintenance only)
Thankfully the diff oils were very clean so I'm hoping the transfer box is as healthy!

Clutch Calibration under Transfer Case in the IID Tool manual.
Up to you if you want to do it, after the results i got, I'd say a fluid change does affect the clutch calibration so would be worth doing, only takes 2 minutes.

Who shipped the oil? I went through the process. FedEx and Royal Mail don’t ship oil and if they did it means that it wasn’t declared properly which can cause big problems if discovered. So I ended up deciding against it. But if you have a company which will allow the shipment of oil from the UK I would be interested to know.

Is the solenoid easy to access on the case housing somewhere?

I ordered from RimmerBros and had them ship me a litre of the LR brake fluid this week. They used DHL without issue.

Because it came with another thousand dollars of parts and was cheap compared to the dealership here. Plus finding an alternative for DOT 4 ISO 4925 class 6 e.g. DOT 4 ESL isn’t that easy.
You’re aware they don’t take standard $5 DOT 4 fluid?

Penrite DOT 4 ESP is ISO 4926 Class 6 and is available from Repco
Penrite Brake Fluid DOT 4 ESP 500mL | PENRITE OIL | BRANDS | Repco Australia (https://www.repco.com.au/en/brands/penrite-oil/penrite-brake-fluid-dot-4-esp-500ml/p/A9681264)

And heading to Repco is harder than clicking on the Add to Cart button on a website when purchasing a whole heap of other parts such as fuel pipes and intake manifolds. It didn’t even increase my shipping cost to include.
My point of comment was that yes, some people will ship fluids internationally and DHL seems ok to do it. I didn’t ship a single container of brake fluid from the UK as that would be insane.

Advanced Factors also use DHL, and they definitely declare it correctly as there's a packing list attached to the outside of the box with 2L of oil clearly marked. Worth getting next time you need to order something from the UK as by itself the shipping is expensive, but when ordered with other parts you pay next to no extra.

Very easy Scott, you do need to climb underneath though, so i just put it to off-road height, threw some jack stands under the rock sliders, chocked the wheels (as i wasn't sure if turning the park brake on would affect it) and climbed under. It the solenoid with the 2 exposed wires running to the plug. I can get a photo when i get home next week if you want?
Mention the wires as it's the one thing underneath I thought might get snagged when i bought the car so I put some cable conduit over.

That’s good to know.

Interesting, did you check the mounting rubber for the Transfer Case and also engine mounts?
BTW does anyone know the torque setting of the bolt that holds the Transfer case to the cross member? After my recent transmission work, I torqued it up to 100Nm because I couldn’t find a spec setting anywhere. Same for the crossmember to body bolts, i torqued them to 120Nm. All these bolts are grade 10.9. Couldn’t find a spec anywhere. No issues or rattles, but want to be sure.
did not have to recalibrate the Transfer case either after the oil change.

Neither, changed the transfer box oil and didn’t recalibrate and it works as normal so I won’t do it now
good to know it’s there if things play up
