Fuel Filter / Water Trap TD5

Hi to the Forum
I have just bought a Discovery 2 /TD5 ,I have not had much to do with diesels before but have herd of horror stories of water getting into common rail engines and creating many problems.
My question is how effective is the standard fuel filter and have people installed after market filter/water traps? If so what brand please.
Or is the oem setup ok?

I haven't had any problems with the standard fuel filter set up on my disco 2 the big thing is change them when they should be changed and use a good quality filter.

The TD5 is not a common rail engine and as a result is less suceptible to these issues
I put a second fuel filter and pump on my TD5 Defender the pump just circulates the fuel through the second filter while you drive.
The contents of the tank are filtered in a few hours of driving or if you get bad fuel i have it setup to run from an external power source (either solar panel / aux battery or battery charger).
I also put a low voltage cut out so if i leave it turned on it turns off at night then on again when the sun comes up.

Check up on the chassis rail behind the rear wheel - there's a fuel filter there, and depending on the model you have, it may have a drain on the bottom, or, if there are wires attached, it has a water sensor in it.

Either way, regular draining of an egg-cup full of diesel from there will give you a good indication if there's any water present. I always carry a spare filter - a good habit to get into, particularly if you're planning any remote area travels.

As djam said, these aren't a common rail system, so you won't have that level of problems. Having said that, any water is a bad thing with diesel engines. I agree with laney, too. Regular servicing and filter changes will help your Disco live long and prosper. [biggrin]

Try to avoid buying fuel from servo's in gullies or next to rivers/creeks, and try to use places with a high fuel turnover (but don't fuel up while the tanker is delivering diesel - it stirs up all the crap in the storage tank.)

I think at this point in time I will change filters regularly and and check for water.
I had a look and mine has a drain on the bottom of the filter.

Add a Racor filter/separator. These are the top shelf of fuel filters. Used in thousands on trucks, mining gear, marine engines.
